AGROECOSYSTEM RESILIENCE DEPENDS ON MULTIPLE INTERWOVEN FACTORS THAT PREPARE THE SYSTEM WITH THE CAPACITY TO ENDURE CLIMATIC CHANGES. THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ENHANCE AGROECOSYSTEM RESILIENCE TO CLIMATE CHANGES USING A COMBINATION OF SOIL CONSERVATION AND NUTRIENT RECYCLING PRACTICES. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE: INCREASE WATER RETENTION OF THE SOIL AFTER RAINFALL EVENTS IN DIFFERENT CROPS AND FARMING PRACTICES; DETERMINE THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF THE ACCUMULATED RECALCITRANT SOIL ORGANIC MATTER THROUGH SINGLE AND COMBINED SOIL CONSERVATION PRACTICES; INCREASE THE POTENTIAL OF CROP RESILIENCE TO THE CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE; MEASURE THE INCREMENT IN SOIL HEALTH THROUGH THE SINGLE AND COMBINED SOIL CONSERVATION PRACTICES; DETERMINE THE NET ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF SOIL CONSERVATIVE PRACTICES; TRANSFER THE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED TO FARMERS AND DISSEMINATE RESEARCH RESULTS TO STAKEHOLDERS. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOIL CONSERVATION AND NUTRIENT RECYCLING-APPLIED PRACTICES WILL BE MEASURED USING THE ACCUMULATION OF RECALCITRANT SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, SOIL MOISTURE RETENTION AND SOIL ANALYSIS FOR NUTRIENTS AND ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY. THE STUDY WILL EMPHASIZE INCREASING AGROECOSYSTEM PRODUCTIVITY AND ITS RESILIENCE TO CLIMATOLOGICAL FACTORS AND EXTREME EVENTS, SUCH AS DROUGHTS AND FLOODS. RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TO IMPACT ALL AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES IN TROPICAL, SUBTROPICAL, AND TEMPERATE AGROECOSYSTEMS. **AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** ISOLATED COMMUNITIES MUST ACHIEVE POWER GENERATION RESILIENCY TO MAINTAIN THEIR LIFE-GIVING INFRASTRUCTURE AFTER NATURAL DISASTERS, AS THEY ARE OFTEN THE LAST TO RECEIVE RELIEF AND TO HAVE THEIR UTILITIES RESTORED. SPOILING OF FOOD AND MEDICINE, INABILITY TO USE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND TO PUMP WATER ARE SOME OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF POWER LOSS, ALL INCREASING THE CHANCES OF DISEASES AND EVEN POSSIBLE DEATH. DUE TO ITS RECENT NATURAL DISASTERS, I.E. HURRICANES IRMA AND MARIA, AND VULNERABILITY OF ITS POWER INFRASTRUCTURE, PUERTO RICO IS AN IDEAL TEST SITE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE RESILIENT POWER SYSTEM. THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE AND LOCAL NON-PROFIT AGENCIES ARE PROPOSING TO DEVELOP A SCALABLE, TRANSPORTABLE, AND FLEXIBLE OFF-GRID POWER GENERATION SYSTEM TO IMPROVE THE SUSTAINABLE RESILIENCY OF RURAL ISOLATED AND ISLAND COMMUNITIES VULNERABLE TO NATURAL DISASTERS. TO ACHIEVE THIS, WE HAVE IDENTIFIED FOUR OBJECTIVES WHICH CONSIST OF A FEEDSTOCK LOGISTIC ANALYSIS, ENGINEERING A TESTBED GASIFIER, EVALUATION OF THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE TECHNOLOGY IN PUERTO RICO, AND A SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH ASSESSMENT OF THE BENEFITS AND TRADEOFFS OF OUR SYSTEM. THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE DETAILED ENGINEERING DESIGN AND ANALYSIS BLUEPRINT OF THE SYSTEM; PUERTO RICO'S FEEDSTOCK INVENTORY DATABASE BEFORE AND AFTER NATURAL DISASTERS IN VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES; ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL ANALYSES OF OUR SYSTEMS AND; A ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTING ANALOGOUS PROGRAMS IN RURAL ISOLATED AND ISLAND COMMUNITIES WHICH WE BELIEVE WILL GREATLY BENEFIT THEM TO OVERCOME NATURAL DISASTERS.$910,362

THE KEYLINE-BIOPOLYMER-BIOCHAR (KBB) ENRICHED TUNNELS INCREASE THE MICROBIAL POPULATION AND THE WATER HOLDING CAPACITY, RENDERING BENEFITS TO SOIL HEALTH. ATMOSPHERIC WATER HARVESTING INJECTED DIRECTLY INTO THE KBB ENRICHED NETS COULD IMPROVE SOIL HEALTH AND DECREASE IRRIGATION NEEDS. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE RESILIENT AGROECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS FOR AGRICULTURAL ZONES. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE: PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCE AND INCREASE WATER USE EFFICIENCY THAT CAN INCREASE NECROMASS ACCUMULATION AND THUS SOIL HEALTH; EVALUATE EFFECTS OF THE SOIL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF THE ACCUMULATED RECALCITRANT SOIL ORGANIC MATTER AND MICROBIAL POPULATION; INCREASE THE POTENTIAL OF CROP RESILIENCE TO THE CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE; DETERMINE THE NET SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF THE AGROECOLOGICAL PRACTICES PROPOSED; AND TRANSFER THE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED TOFARMERS AND STAKEHOLDERS AT MULTIPLE LEVELS. THE IMPROVEMENT IN SOIL HEALTH WILL BE MEASURED USING THE ACCUMULATION OF RECALCITRANT SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, SOIL MOISTURE RETENTION AND SOIL ANALYSIS FOR NUTRIENTS AND ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY, AND SOILBORNE PATHOGENS. THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY WILL ALLOW US TO EVALUATE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROPOSED METHODS. THE PROPOSAL IS SUBMITTED IN RESPONSE TO THE NIFA PROGRAM AREA PRIORITY OF SOIL HEALTH (CODE A1401). AN OUTBREAK OF INSECT SCALES AND DISEASES WAS OBSERVED IN TROPICAL FRUIT ORCHARDS AFTER THE ATMOSPHERIC DISTURBANCES CAUSED BY HURRICANE MARIA IN PUERTO RICO. SYMPTOMS SUCH AS DEAD BRANCHES AND MANGO TREES DOWNED AS WELL AS OTHER FRUIT BEARING TREES WERE OBSERVED. THE GOAL OF THIS STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE INSECT SCALES AND PATHOGENIC FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH THESE SYMPTOMS. THE PROGRAM PRIORITIES EMPHASIZED IN OUR PROPOSAL ARE PLANT HEALTH AND PRODUCTION AND PLANT PRODUCTS. THIS PROPOSAL SUPPORTS THE PROGRAM CRITERIA RELATED TO THE FOLLOWING: APPLICATION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE OR NEW APPROACHES TO UNSOLVED CHALLENGES THAT RESULT IN DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS AND RAPID RESPONSE TO NATURAL DISASTERS AND UNANTICIPATED CHANGES AFFECTING AGRICULTURE. OUR OBJECTIVES ARE: 1) IDENTIFY SPECIES OF INSECT SCALES AND FUNGAL PATHOGENS, 2) DETERMINE THEIR ABUNDANCE AND THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THESE DISEASES AND PESTS, 3) DETERMINE THEIR POPULATION DYNAMICS ACCORDING TO PLANT PHENOLOGICAL STAGE, AND 4) STUDY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN INSECT SCALES AND FUNGAL PATHOGENS.$119,366
