THE IMPORTANCE OF OCEAN SUSTAINABILITY LEADS TO A CRITICAL NEED TO FURTHER INTEGRATE BIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS INTO OCEAN OBSERVING SYSTEMS. YET THE MATURITY OF BIOLOGY AND ECOSYSTEM OBSERVATIONS IS LESS THAN THAT OF THE PHYSICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL MONITORING. THUS A FIVE TO TEN YEAR PLAN FOR MATURING BIO/ECOSYSTEM AND PROVIDING MORE COMPREHENSIVE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY OBSERVATIONS IS NECESSARY AND IS CONSISTENT WITH THE NASA SCIENCE GOALS AND EARTH SCIENCE DIVISION S STRATEGY TO DETECT AND PREDICT CHANGES IN EARTH S ECOSYSTEMS AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES. THE PROPOSED WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON PLANKTON DYNAMICS AS PART OF THE OCEAN FOOD CHAIN AND CARBON CYCLE. THE WORKSHOP WILL BRING TOGETHER A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM TO IDENTIFY ELEMENTS REQUIRED FOR A MULTI-YEAR IMPLEMENTATION OF AN OBSERVING AND ANALYSES SYSTEM FOCUSED ON IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASE OF THE FOOD CHAIN. THE GROUP WILL IDENTIFY LEVEL OF MATURITY OF MEASUREMENTS IN TERMS OF REQUIREMENTS COORDINATION OF OBSERVATIONS DATA MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION PRODUCTS. THE MAJOR OUTCOME OF THE WORKSHOP WILL BE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OBSERVATION AND MODELING IMPLEMENTATION PLANS FOR THE WIDELY ACCEPTED GOOS PHYTOPLANKTON DIVERSITY AND BIOMASS AND ZOOPLANKTON DIVERSITY AND BIOMASS EOVS.$7,548
