PIERCING THROUGH THE TORUS: A 15 YEAR X-RAY VARIABILITY SURVEY OF BAT AGN$857,399

THE BAT AGN SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY (BASS) PROVIDED THE FIRST LARGE AND COMPLETE CENSUS OF THE KEY PHYSICAL PARAMETERS OF THE SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES THAT ARE POWERING THE LOCAL ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI (AGN) POPULATION INCLUDING THE BLACK HOLE MASS OBSCURATION BOLOMETRIC LUMINOSITY AND ACCRETION RATE. WE REQUEST FUNDING FOR THE BASS PI TO COMPLETE THE 105-MONTH DATA RELEASE WHICH WILL INCLUDE AN UPDATED SOURCE CATALOG AND X-RAY ANALYSIS BASED ON ARCHIVAL DATA. MOST OF THE NEWLY AVAILABLE DATA COME FROM LEGACY SURVEYS WITH SWIFT-XRT NUSTAR AND XMM BAND C PROGRAMS THAT HAD NO ASSOCIATED ANALYSIS FUNDS. THE DATA RELEASE WILL FOCUS ON PROVIDING A COMPLETE CENSUS OF ALL AGN IN THE 105-MONTH SWIFT-BAT SURVEY AND PARTICULARLY THE NEWLY IDENTIFIED SOURCES NOT INCLUDED IN DR1. THE 105-MONTH RELEASE WILL ALSO PROVIDE UPDATED COUNTERPARTS BASED ON THE X-RAY WISE AND GAIA CROSS-MATCHING AS WELL AS AGN SUBCLASSES REDSHIFTS BLACK HOLE MASSES AND EDDINGTON RATIOS THAT ARE CRITICAL FOR LEGACY STUDIES. FINALLY WE REQUEST FUNDING TO RELEASE A CATALOG OF UV PHOTOMETRY FROM SWIFT-UVOT AND XMM-OM AND AN ASSOCIATED PSF EXTRACTION MACHINE LEARNING TOOL FOR UV IMAGES. THIS DATA WILL ENABLE US TO PROPERLY MEASURE THE BOLOMETRIC LUMINOSITY FROM THE SIMULTANEOUS X-RAY AND UV DATA AS WELL AS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE IMPROVED SPATIAL RESOLUTION TO MEASURE THE CENTRAL STAR FORMATION OF SWIFT-BAT AGN HOST GALAXIES. WE WILL RELEASE ALL OF THE DATA TO THE COMMUNITY ENABLING DOZENS OF ADDITIONAL STUDIES BEYOND OUR SUCCESS IN THE DR1. THIS WORK WILL INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF COMPTON-THICK AGN THE COSMIC X-RAY BACKGROUND NUCLEAR STAR FORMATION IN AGN AND BLACK HOLE GROWTH ACROSS COSMIC TIME THUS SATISFYING NASA STRATEGIC PLAN TO UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF BLACK HOLES.$638,616

CURRENT OBSERVATIONS FROM RADIO TO GAMMA RAYS ARE OFFERING AN AMAZING AND UNPRECEDENTED VIEW OF THE SKY UNVEILING PROPERTIES OF THE DIFFUSE EMISSION IN THE MILKY WAY MOSTLY ASSOCIATED WITH COSMIC RAYS AND MAGNETIC FIELDS. INDEED RECENT OBSERVATIONS AT THE OPPOSITE FREQUENCIES OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM SUCH AS MICROWAVES WITH PLANCK AND GAMMA RAYS WITH FERMI LAT HAVE REVEALED DIFFUSE EMISSION FROM THE MILKY WAY WHICH IS PRODUCED BY COSMIC RAYS INTERACTING WITH THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM AND MAGNETIC FIELDS DURING THEIR ACCELERATION AND PROPAGATION IN THE GALAXY. MANY REGIONS OF UNEXPLAINED ENHANCED EMISSION SHOW UP AS GALACTIC LARGE-SCALE FEATURES WHICH SOMETIMES SEEM TO PARTIALLY OVERLAP AT DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. HOWEVER THESE FEATURES DEPEND ON THE MODEL ASSUMPTION FOR THE DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY OF COSMIC RAYS AND MAGNETIC FIELDS ACROSS THE GALAXY WHICH ARE POORLY KNOWN. AN EXPLANATORY EXAMPLE OF THESE FEATURES IS THE FAMOUS FERMI BUBBLES SEEN IN GAMMA RAYS TWO LARGE LOBE-LIKE STRUCTURES LIKELY EXTENDING ~10 KPC FROM THE GALACTIC CENTER POSSIBLY BEING A SIGNAL OF THE PAST ACTIVITY OF THE MILKY WAY S BLACK HOLE. THE FERMI BUBBLES CAN POTENTIALLY BE CONNECTED TO THE HAZE AND/OR LOOPS AND SPURS SEEN IN MICROWAVES AND WHOSE ORIGIN IS STILL UNKNOWN. BY ANALYZING PUBLICLY AVAILABLE NASA DATA WE PROPOSE TO INVESTIGATE THE LARGE-SCALE DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY OF COSMIC RAYS AND MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE GALAXY PRODUCING DIFFUSE EMISSION. WE ALSO PROPOSE TO SPATIALLY AND SPECTRALLY CHARACTERIZE THE UNEXPLAINED DIFFUSE FEATURES OF PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATA FROM RADIO TO GAMMA RAYS. RESULTS FOR A VARIETY OF NASA SPACE MISSIONS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY FOR REPRODUCIBILITY AND FOR FURTHER STUDIES WITH THE EFFECT OF ENHANCING THE OUTCOME OF THE ADAP PROGRAM IN PARTICULAR AND THE NASA MISSIONS IN GENERAL.$499,889

WE PROPOSE TO CONTINUE OUR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL COVERAGE OF THE COOLING NEUTRON STAR IN MAXI J0556-332 WHICH WAS STRONGLY HEATED DURING A NEAR/SUPER-EDDINGTON OUTBURST IN 2011/12 AND AGAIN DURING A SMALLER OUTBURST IN 2016. OUR QUIESCENT OBSERVATIONS WHICH REVEALED AN EXTRAORDINARILY HOT AND RAPIDLY COOLING NEUTRON STAR HAVE PROVIDED UNIQUE INSIGHTS INTO NEUTRON-STAR STRUCTURE AND IN PARTICULAR INTO THE NATURE OF HEAT SOURCES IN THE SHALLOW OUTER CRUST. RECENT OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT THE ONGOING COOLING TREND IS NOW DOMINATED BY HEAT INDUCED DURING THE FIRST OUTBURST IN DEEPER CRUSTAL LAYERS. WE REQUEST A 106 KS XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATION TO INVESTIGATE IF THE REMARKABLE PROPERTIES OF THE OUTER CRUST EXTEND TO DEEPER LAYERS WHERE MATTER REACHES NUCLEAR DENSITY.$49,712

NEW OUTBURSTS ARE GENERALLY FIRST NOTICED BY ALL-SKY MONITORS OR WIDE-FIELD CAMERAS. HOWEVER GIVEN THE LIMITED SENSITIVITY OF SUCH INSTRUMENTS A TRANSIENT'S FLUX IS TYPICALLY ALREADY A FACTOR OF 1E3-1E4 ABOVE ITS PRE-OUTBURST LEVEL WHEN IT IS FIRST DETECTED AND FOLLOW-UP OBSERVATIONS WITH MORE SENSITIVE INSTRUMENTS OFTEN DO NOT START UNTIL THE FLUX HAS RISEN BY AN ADDITIONAL FACTOR OF 5-10. AS A RESULT THE EARLY RISING PHASE OF BH LMXB OUTBURSTS IS RELATIVELY POORLY STUDIED.$37,500
