THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROPOSAL ARE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROBUST MEASUREMENTS OF REMOTE-SENSING REFLECTANCE TO DERIVE DIRECT AND INDIRECT INDICES OF COASTAL WATER QUALITY DEMONSTRATION OF THE APPLICABILITY OF PORTABLE COTS INSTRUMENTATION FOR CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION ACTIVITIES AT THE LAND-SEA INTERFACE IN DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENTS AND ENHANCEMENT OF APPROPRIATE DATA AND METHODOLOGIES FOR ACE BASELINE RESEARCH INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING C-OPS (WITH C-PROPS) FIELDWORK: A) LEVERAGED (HYSPIRI) BASELINE RESEARCH FOR ACE SCIENCE QUESTIONS ATPINTO LAKE USING SPECTRAL END-MEMBER ANALYSES FOR THE WATER QUALITY COMPONENT; B) DROUGHT-STRICKEN LAKES MEASUREMENTS WHICH USUALLY CONTAIN TURBID WATER TO FURTHER DEFINE THE "TURBID WATER LIMIT" FOR THE GLOBAL ALGORITHM BEING DEVELOPED AND MORE COMPLETELY CHARACTERIZE THE WATER COLUMN; AND C) MEASUREMENTS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY CALIFORNIA DELTA AND SAN DIEGO BAY WATERSHEDS WHEREIN VERY SHALLOW OBSERVATIONS IN HIGHLY TURBID WATERS ARE ROUTINELY POSSIBLE. THE OBSERVATIONS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND SAN DIEGO BAY AREAS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO AN EMERGING CAPABILITY TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF POLLUTANTS USING END-MEMBER ANALYSES. HARBORS THAT HAVE BEEN SAMPLED ON THE WEST COAST APPEAR SOMEWHAT ANOMALOUSLY AS DO OTHER ATYPICAL WATER MASSES E.G. THOSE INFLUENCED BY THE PRESENCE OF MYCOSPORINE-LIKE AMINO ACIDS (MAAS).$39,355

THIS PROPOSAL PROVIDES THE RIGOROUS SCIENCE NEEDED TO APPLY COTS ADVANCES (C-OPS AND CPROPS) WHICH ANY RESEARCHER CAN PURCHASE COUPLED WITH IMPROVEMENTS IN GLOBALLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES (THE PROTOCOLS) PLUS STATE-OF-THE-ART DATA PROCESSING FROM PROSIT AND THE MOBILE VERSION CALLED IPROSIT. THE RESULTS WILL BE APPLIED TO END-MEMBER ANALYSES AND SCIENCE QUESTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH BASELINE RESEARCH FOR NEXT GENERATION SENSORS (ACE AND HYSPIRI) WITH FINAL ARCHIVING (SEABASS) FOR COMMUNITY ACCESS. THE PROPOSED ENHANCEMENTS TO THESE CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION COMPONENTS REPRESENT LEVERAGED INVESTMENTS IN RESOURCES NASA HAS ALREADY SUPPORTED. BY FOCUSING ON HIGH TURBIDITY WATER MASSES AS WELL AS LEVERAGING MULTIPLE PAST AND ONGOING OCEAN COLOR PROJECTS IN THE REGIONS TO BE SAMPLED AN OUTSTANDING RETURN ON INVESTMENT IS ANTICIPATED.$0
