TITLE: QUANTUM-ENHANCED RADIO FREQUENCY SENSOR TECHNOLOGY FOR GEOTHERMAL EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT
IN RESPONSE TO THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT DE-FOA-0003387 PRESENTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) AND ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY – ENERGY (ARPA-E), HALLIBURTON IS SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL FOR A QUANTUM-ENHANCED RF-PHOTONIC IMAGING SYSTEM AIMED AT IMPROVING SUBSURFACE IMAGING FOR GEOTHERMAL APPLICATIONS BY SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCING SENSOR MEASUREMENT DEPTH WHILE MAINTAINING HIGH RESOLUTION INTEGRITY. THE THREE-YEAR PROJECT WILL BE LED BY HALLIBURTON IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN. THE HALLIBURTON TEAM INTENDS TO LEVERAGE QUANTUM-ENHANCED TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE THE SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO (SNR) OVER CURRENT APPLICATIONS, THEREBY ENABLING THE USE OF LOWER FREQUENCIES WITHOUT SACRIFICING RESOLUTION. BY EMPLOYING THE PROPOSED QUANTUM-ENHANCED METHODS, PETROPHYSICISTS AND GEOLOGISTS CAN BETTER MAP THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF ROCK FORMATIONS, IDENTIFY FAULT ZONES, AND DETECT FLUID-FILLED FRACTURES FOR MORE ACCURATE GEOTHERMAL ASSESSMENTS AND PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT. UNDERSTANDING THE ELECTROMAGNETIC (EM) PROPERTIES AND ATTENUATION OF SUBSURFACE MATERIALS IS CRITICAL FOR EFFECTIVE GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION, INCLUDING MAPPING SUBSURFACE FEATURES, MONITORING CHANGES OVER TIME, AND ASSESSING THE VIABILITY OF GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES.$4,000,000
