ORANGE COUNTY, FLORIDA IS CONSTRUCTING A FLOATING PHOTOVOLTAIC (FPV) FACILITY ON THE SURFACE OF THE RETENTION POND LOCATED AT THE COUNTY’S UTILITIES AND CUSTOMER SERVICE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING (UAB) IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA. THE FPV SYSTEM WILL HAVE AN ESTIMATED POWER OUTPUT OF 944KW AND WILL CONSIST OF ROUGHLY 1,600 PV PANELS SPANNING NEARLY 1.8 ACRES OF WATER SURFACE. THE POWER GENERATED BY THIS FPV SYSTEM WILL DIRECTLY POWER THE COUNTY’S ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, CONTRIBUTING OVER 80% OF THE BUILDINGS’ OPERATING NEEDS AND RESULT IN ABOUT $100,000 IN ANNUAL ELECTRICITY SAVINGS.
WITHIN THIS LARGER EFFORT, THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY AWARD WILL COVER THE FULL ENGINEERING AND DESIGN OF THE FPV SYSTEM AND PROCUREMENT OF THE FLOATING PV SYSTEM, ANCHORS, AS WELL AS THE PV MODULES. ONCE INTERCONNECTED, THE FPV SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR THE COUNTY WHILE CONSERVING VALUABLE LAND AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE COUNTY’S SUSTAINABILITY GOALS. THIS SYSTEM WILL BE THE SECOND INSTALLATION FOR ORANGE COUNTY, FLORIDA AS THEY SEEK TO IMPLEMENT GREEN ENERGY AT MOST, IF NOT ALL, OF THEIR FACILITIES.$400,000
