**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** 1. WHAT IS THE CURRENT ISSUE OR PROBLEM THAT THE RESEARCH ADDRESSES AND WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE RESEARCHED? WHEN ANSWERING THIS QUESTION CONSIDER A PERSPECTIVE THAT GOES BEYOND THE PRIMARY END-USERS OF THE SCIENCE YOU ARE CONDUCTING. WHY IS THIS TOPIC IMPORTANT TO THE LARGER COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF ECONOMICS, COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS AGRICULTURE?THE EIGHT-COUNTY BAY AREA SUPPORTS THE ANNUAL PRODUCTION OF NEARLY 3 MILLION TONS OF FOOD, ENCOMPASSING EIGHTY DIFFERENT CROPS AND GENERATING $1.4 BILLION ANNUALLY. WHILE THE GROWTH OF HUMAN COMMUNITIES GENERALLY CONSUMES FARMLAND, AT THE SAME TIME IT ALSO ADDS ECONOMIC VALUE TO AGRICULTURE. ALTHOUGH URBANIZATION, RISING LAND VALUES, AND HABITAT PRESERVATION HAVE REMOVED SIGNIFICANT ACREAGE FROM PRODUCTION, THE NUMBER OF BAY AREA FARMS AND INCOME PER ACRE HAVE BOTH SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. IN ADDITION, THE INCREASING COMPLEXITY OF THE FOOD SYSTEM (LESS THAN 1% OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS ARE SOLD DIRECTLY TO CONSUMERS) HAS LED TO A RAPID EXPLOSION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FOOD-BASED BUSINESSES - PROCESSING, DISTRIBUTION, RETAIL, AND MARKETING/EDUCATION, TO NAME ONLY THE PRIMARY TYPES. THE FOOD SECTOR HAS SOME OF THE LOWEST BARRIERS TO ENTRY AND EASIEST PATHS TO OWNERSHIP, MEANING THAT IT HAS EXCEPTIONAL POTENTIAL AS A STRATEGY FOR DECREASING SOCIAL INEQUITY. THE RESOUNDING SUCCESS AND DRAMATIC GROWTH OF COMPANIES THAT HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ASSISTED LOCAL RESIDENTS WITH SUCH BARRIERS - LA COCINA INCUBATOR, THE KITCHENER, LA PLACITA, INNER CITY ADVISORS - SERVES AS TESTIMONY TO FRESH FOODS ENTERPRISES' POTENTIAL FOR MEETING THIS CRUCIAL NEED IN OUR REGION. THIS PROGRAM FILLS A MUCH NEEDED SUPPLY FOR AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE TRAINING IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. EDUCATIONAL SUPPLY IS CURRENTLY LIMITED TO ONE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THIS REGION, SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE, ISSUING 10 AWARDS (7 ASSOCIATE'S DEGREES, 3 CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENTS) ON AVERAGE ANNUALLY OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS IN THE TOP CODE 0199.00 - OTHER AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES. THERE ARE NO COLLEGES IN THE EAST BAY AREA SUB-REGION ISSUING AWARDS IN THE 0199.00 TOP CODE. IN ADDITION, THERE IS ONLY ONE COLLEGE IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION, HARTNELL COLLEGE, ISSUING AN AVERAGE OF 50 CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS IN CIP 1.1002 FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND PROCESSING.THIS PROJECT BRIDGES TWO RECENTLY-APPROVED CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENT AT MERRITT COLLEGE: (1) URBAN AGROECOLOGY AND (2) DIGITAL MARKETING. MERRITT COLLEGE IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS HIGH CALIBER OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER EDUCATION, INCLUDING SUCH FACILITIES AS AN 8-ACRE LANDSCAPE HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENT WITH ASSOCIATED INFRASTRUCTURE. UNDERSTANDING FOOD SYSTEMS PROVIDES STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE ON THE WIDE ARRAY OF AGRICULTURAL PATHWAYS THAT EXIST FROM WHICH THEY CAN CHOOSE THE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BEST SUITED TO THEM. PREPARING FUTURE AGRICULTURAL WORKERS WITH KNOWLEDGE IN AGRICULTURAL ECOLOGY ENABLES GRADUATES TO BETTER MEET THE BASIC NEEDS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS CONSUMER DEMANDS FOR FOOD PRODUCED USING SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES. THIS PROPOSAL EXPANDS INTERDISCIPLINARITY INTO THE REALM OF BUSINESS SUCH THAT GRADUATING STUDENTS WILL BE PREPARED TO LEVERAGE THE POTENTIAL OF DIGITAL MARKETING TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS IN FOOD DISTRIBUTION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP.THIS PROJECT PROPOSAL HAS THREE MAIN TARGET OBJECTIVES: (1) DEVELOP NEW CURRICULA FOR WORKFORCE TRAINING IN THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES BY CREATING AGROECOLOGY AND MARKETING MODULES FOR GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES AND FORMING PARTNERSHIPS FOR PAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS; (2) REFRESH WORKFORCE TRAINING CURRICULUM TO MEET 21ST CENTURY NEEDS BY OFFERING HIGH-QUALITY EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE URBAN AGROECOLOGY AND DIGITAL MARKETING CURRICULA AND CO-DESIGNING A SUMMER ACADEMY PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS; AND (3) INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR AGRICULTURAL CAREERS AND JOB-BASED TRAINING BY CONNECTING STUDENTS, ALUMNI, AND EMPLOYERS. THIS PROJECT PROPOSAL BRIDGES THESE TWO CUTTING-EDGE CERTIFICATES OF ACHIEVEMENT SUCH THAT GRADUATING STUDENTS ARE WELL-PREPARED TO ENGAGE IN THE AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE OF THE 21ST CENTURY, WHICH OFTEN DEMANDS A DIVERSE SKILL SET FROM SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION PRACTICES THROUGH STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURAL GOODS. THE COVID-19 CRISIS HAS DEMONSTRATED THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL MARKETING FOR REGIONAL GROWERS. THE FUTURE OF SMALL-SCALE PRODUCERS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES DEPENDS ON A STRONG DIGITAL MARKETING PRESENCE. FINALLY, THROUGH A COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES (UC ANR) 4-H PROGRAM, THIS PROJECT PROPOSAL BOOSTS YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN THESE TWO CERTIFICATES THROUGH A SUMMER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.$500,000
