TITLE: SURFACE LASER ARCHITECTED MAGNETS (SLAM)
TO DEVELOP MAGNETS WITH DOUBLE THE ENERGY PRODUCT OF STATE-OF-THE-ART NDFEB MAGNETS AT ELEVATED OPERATING TEMPERATURES BY TAILORING MAGNET SURFACE ARCHITECTURE TO RESIST DEMAGNETIZATION, WHICH WILL RESULT IN INCREASED EFFICIENCY ELECTRIC MOTORS. TODAY’S HIGH EFFICIENCY ELECTRIC MOTORS ARE DRIVEN BY LARGE AND EXPENSIVE PERMANENT MAGNETS WHICH REQUIRE CRITICAL-SUPPLY-RISK HEAVY RARE EARTH ELEMENTS TO OPERATE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES (150OC) WITHOUT DEMAGNETIZING. SLAM IS A NEW MAGNET ARCHITECTURE WHICH MITIGATES EFFICIENCY LIMITING THERMALLY INDUCED DEMAGNETIZATION WHILE REDUCING THE USE OF EXPENSIVE HEAVY RARE EARTH ELEMENTS. USING LASER-BASED POST-PROCESSING METHODS, SLAM MAGNETICALLY HARDENS THE WEAKEST POINTS ON A NDFEB MAGNET SURFACE AGAINST DEMAGNETIZATION, WHICH ENABLES HIGHER TORQUE AND MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT MOTORS. THESE IMPROVED MAGNETS WILL ALLOW MOTOR MANUFACTURERS TO REDUCE MOTOR COST AND MASS COMPARED TO CURRENT ELECTRIC MOTORS. IN TURN, REDUCED COSTS WILL ACCELERATE ADOPTION OF ELECTRIC GROUND AND AIR VEHICLES, REDUCE OVERALL ENERGY DEMANDS AND GREENHOUSE GASSES, CURTAIL DEPENDENCY ON NON-DOMESTIC RARE-EARTH (RE) ELEMENTS, AND CREATE RESILIENT US BASED ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE.$2,601,986
