PHOTOSYNTHETIC MARINE PHYTOPLANKTON FORM THE BASE OF THE MARINE FOOD WEB AND DRIVE THE BIOLOGICAL PUMP (BP) I.E. THE SINKING AND SEQUESTERING OF ORGANIC CARBON TO THE DEEP OCEAN THAT LOWERS ATMOSPHERIC CO2. PHYTOPLANKTON SIZE IS A MASTER TRAIT THAT AFFECTS THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF OCEANIC ECOSYSTEMS; PHYTOPLANKTON SIZE CLASSES (PSCS) CLOSELY CORRESPOND TO PHYTOPLANKTON FUNCTIONAL TYPES (PFTS). PSCS CHANGE INTER-ANNUALLY AND ON DECADAL TIMESCALES WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY AND THE BP. RECENT ADVANCES IN OCEAN COLOR SCIENCE ALLOW MORE COMPLETE CHARACTERIZATION OF OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS E.G. KOSTADINOV ET AL. (2016A TK16) LEVERAGE THE BACKSCATTERING-BASED PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION (PSD) ALGORITHM KSM09 IN ORDER TO RETRIEVE SIZE-PARTITIONED PHYTOPLANKTON CARBON (C) CONCENTRATIONS AND CARBON-BASED PSCS. HERE WE PROPOSE A JOINT STUDY OF OCEAN COLOR SATELLITE DATA AND THE LATEST GENERATION OF EARTH SYSTEM MODELS (WHICH ARE PART OF THE 6TH COUPLED MODEL INTERCOMPARISON CMIP6) TO: (1) IMPROVE THE KSM09 ALGORITHM COMPARE IT WITH AN ABSORPTION-BASED PFT ALGORITHM AND PRODUCE A MULTI-PLATFORM MERGED DATA SET AND (2) ESTABLISH BIOLOGY-PHYSICS CONNECTIONS AND CHARACTERIZE BIOLOGICAL EL NI O-SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO) VARIABILITY IN THIS SATELLITE RECORD AND IN CLIMATE MODELS. OUR OVERALL GOAL IS TO DEVELOP A SUSTAINABLE CURRICULUM TO INSTITUTIONALIZE RESEARCH-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (RBIS), WHICH USE AUTHENTIC RESEARCH AS THE FOCUS OF AN ACTIVE, STUDENT-CENTERED, LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. RBIS ARE PROVEN TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACHES FOR INCREASING STUDENT MOTIVATION AND RETENTION, ILLUSTRATING THE ROLE OF RESEARCH IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY, AND DEVELOPING TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS LIKE TEAM-WORK, CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND COMMUNICATION. THIS PROJECT WILL REDESIGN AN EXISTING LECTURE/LAB COURSE ENTITLED MOLECULAR METHODS IN ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION TO USE RBIS AS A MEANS TO:(1)INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS CONDUCTING RESEARCH AND RECEIVING TRAINING IN AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES,(2)INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT WITH, AND CONFIDENCE IN, THEIR ABILITY TO CONDUCT AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH,(3)IMPROVE STUDENT CRITICAL-THINKING, COMMUNICATION, AND TEAMWORK SKILLS, AND(4)INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS SEEKING GRADUATE DEGREES AND/OR CAREERS IN AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES. ESTABLISHED PROJECTS THAT ADDRESS GLOBAL CHANGE IMPACTS ON SOIL MICROBIAL POPULATIONS AND THE EFFICACY OF PREDATORY INSECTS FOR BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL WILL FORM THE BASIS OF THE RBIS. THIS CURRICULUM WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE RESEARCH, FROM FIELD TO LAB TO COMMUNICATING SCIENCE. MULTI-ISOTOPIC MEASUREMENTS OF OZONE FORMATION ON INTERSTELLAR DUST GRAIN ANALOGSDECADES OF MULTI-OXYGEN ISOTOPIC MEASUREMENTS OF PLANETARY MATERIALS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE DISTRIBUTION OF OXYGEN ISOTOPES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM IS ANOMALOUS AND CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY CONVENTIONAL MASS-DEPENDENT ISOTOPIC FRACTIONATION PROCESSES. BECAUSE OF THE CENTRAL IMPORTANCE THAT OXYGEN HAS AS BOTH A REFRACTORY AND VOLATILE ELEMENT UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF OXYGEN ISOTOPES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM AS REVEALED BY STUDIES OF METEORITES AND THE GENESIS MISSION IS ESSENTIAL FOR ADVANCING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. BASED ON THE WELL-KNOWN MASSINDEPENDENT OXYGEN ISOTOPE EFFECT OF OZONE IN THE GAS-PHASE IT WAS RECENTLY PROPOSED THAT THE FORMATION OF OZONE A LIKELY PRECURSOR TOWATER ON COLD DUST GRAINS IN DENSE MOLECULAR CLOUDS MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ANOMALOUS DISTRIBUTION OF OXYGEN ISOTOPES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. HERE WE PROPOSE SYSTEMATIC LABORATORY STUDIES OF OZONE FORMATION ON COLD DUST GRAIN SURFACES TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT DUST GRAIN PHOTOCHEMISTRY MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MASS-INDEPENDENT DISTRIBUTIONS OF OXYGEN ISOTOPES IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM.$273,200
