** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** EXPANDING THE TEXAS SCHOLAR PROGRAM (TEXAS: TEACHING WITH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN ANIMAL SCIENCE)IS AN INTEGRATED PROJECT (EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND EXTENSION)THAT FOCUSES ON INCREASING THE SUCCESS OF UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS BY PREPARING THEM TO ADDRESS NEEDS RELATED TO ANIMAL HEALTH, PRODUCTION AND ANIMAL PRODUCTS. THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT INCLUDES THREE HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI): TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-KINGSVILLE, UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO-MAYAGUEZ AND WEST TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY. A MINIMUM OF 60 UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS WILL BE SELECTED (THROUGH AN INTERVIEW PROCESS) TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. THE GOAL IS TO RECRUIT, CULTIVATE, AND GRADUATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF A HIGHLY-SKILLED, DIVERSE WORKFORCE THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO INNOVATIONS IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY. HISPANIC LEADERS IN ANIMAL SCIENCE WILL BE INCREASED WITH PARTICIPATION IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES, AND ENHANCE TECHNICAL, SCIENTIFIC, AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS OF HISPANIC UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS RECRUITED FROM THE THREE COLLABORATING HSIS. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES WILL BE MET WITH A UNIQUE, MULTIFACETED APPROACH TO EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THAT INCLUDES: STUDENT RESEARCH, EXTENSION PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, PROFESSIONAL MEETING PARTICIPATION, EDUCATIONAL TOUR, JOB SHADOWING, JOURNAL CLUB, AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING. ** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN THE AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO TRAIN EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS IN FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES IN A WAY THAT WOULD ENABLE THEM TO MOTIVATE THEIR STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN AGRICULTURAL FIELDS. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE A DYNAMIC MULTIDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENT WHERE RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND OUTREACH ARE INTEGRATED TO PROVIDE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL (KINDERGARTEN TO 8TH GRADE, K-8) TEACHERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO CONDUCT CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH AND DEVELOP INNOVATIVE CURRICULAR MODULES RELATED TO SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE CONCEPTS TO PROMOTE AGRICULTURAL LITERACY IN SOUTH TEXAS. THE PROJECT WILL FACILITATE A DEEP UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES AND EXPLORE EFFECTIVE PEDAGOGIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS' LEARNING IN THESE FIELDS. SIXTEEN K-8 TEACHERS WILL BE TRAINED EVERY YEAR IN TWO COHORTS IN A COLLABORATIVE GROUP SETTING TO COMPLETE RESEARCH PROJECTS AND DEVELOP A SERIES OF CURRICULAR MODULES TO INSPIRE STUDENTS' INTERESTS IN FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES. EACH COHORT WITH 8 TEACHERS WILL PARTICIPATE IN A 2.5-WEEK OF SUMMER PROGRAM TO TACKLE VARIOUS RESEARCH TOPICS, INTERACT WITH FACULTY AND GRADUATE STUDENT MENTORS, USDA REEU STUDENTS, AND INDUSTRIAL ADVISORS, COMPLETE DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING, AND DEVELOP CURRICULAR MODULES TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. ACADEMIC YEAR FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES WILL BE CONDUCTED TO ENSURE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MODULES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO INCREASE THE HIGHLY NEEDED FUTURE AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS BY PROVIDING RESEARCH AND PEDAGOGICAL TRAININGS TO K-8 TEACHERS (ESPECIALLY HISPANICS, WOMEN, AND/OR TEACHERS WHO WERE FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE GRADUATES) THAT WILL LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF COURSE MODULES RELATED TO SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE CONCEPTS. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT TALENT GAP IN AGRICULTURAL FIELDS NEEDED TO DRIVE INNOVATION AND TO SUSTAIN THE U.S. GLOBAL TECHNICAL SUPERIORITY. THERE IS ALSO A SIGNIFICANT UNDER-REPRESENTATION OF MINORITIES IN AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE, ESPECIALLY HISPANICS AND WOMEN. EMPLOYERS ARE NOW SEEKING TALENTS WITH A BROADER SKILLSET INCLUDING LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK, PROBLEM SOLVING, DIGITAL COMPETENCY, COMMUNICATION, AND CRITICAL THINKING. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A MODEL ENVIRONMENT FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS WHERE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ARE TIGHTLY INTEGRATED AROUND THE DIFFERENT FACETS OF ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH IN AGRICULTURAL FIELDS. THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON THREE KEY AREAS: 1) ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS, 2) WATER QUALITY AND MANAGEMENT, 3) AGRICULTURE ECONOMICS AND DECISION MAKING. EXTENSION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE PROGRAM.THE PROJECT'SOBJECTIVES ARE: 1) PROVIDING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH RELATED TO AGRICULTURE DISCIPLINES TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY HISPANIC AND WOMEN; 2) INCREASING THE NUMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN GRADUATE EDUCATION IN AGRICULTURE DISCIPLINES; 3) INTEGRATING EXTENSION EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO TRAIN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL SKILLS FOR AGRICULTURAL WORKFORCE. THE MAIN GOAL OF THE DRONE WAVE FACTOR PROGRAM IS TO RECRUIT, TRAIN, MENTOR, AND GRADUATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN PROFESSIONALS WITH COMPETITIVE GEOSPATIAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY SKILLS AND INCREASE WORKFORCE DIVERSITY IN AGRICULTURAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES. WE WILL IMPLEMENT HANDS-ON TRAINING IN SPATIAL SCIENCES TO SUPPORT RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AND TO BOOST PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO WOMEN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO GAIN A COMPETITIVE EDGE IN THE PROFESSIONAL MARKETPLACE. WE ARE PLANNING THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: TRAINING IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND REMOTE SENSING, PREPARATION FOR THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION DRONE PILOT EXAM, UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PROJECTS, A TEXAS GEOSPATIAL TOUR (A TOUR OF FACILITIES WORKING WITH SPATIAL TECHNOLOGIES IN TEXAS), INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE, PARTICIPATION IN PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS, MONTHLY RESEARCH/DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA SKILLS. THE DRONE WAVE FACTOR PROGRAM WILL RECRUIT OUTSTANDING AND MOTIVATED STUDENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENTS OF RANGE AND WILDLIFE SCIENCES AND ANIMAL SCIENCE AS WELL AS OTHER DEPARTMENTS WITHIN THE DICK AND MARY LEWIS KLEBERG COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY- KINGSVILLE. BECAUSE WOMEN STUDENTS ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES, WE WILL FOCUS OUR RECRUITMENT ON HISPANIC WOMEN. TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM, STUDENTS WILL NEED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, OR SENIOR CLASSIFICATION AT THE START OF THE PROGRAM, GPA > 3.0, AND FULL-TIME STATUS (12 CREDIT HOURS FOR EACH LONG SEMESTER).
