INFLATION REDUCTION ACT (IRA) – COMMUNITY-ORIENTED METHANE AND CO-POLLUTANT EMISSION MEASUREMENTS IN THE APPALACHIAN REGION (COMPEAR) THIS PROJECT WILL MEASURE EMISSIONS OF METHANE AND CO-EMITTED SPECIES IN AND AROUND CJ/EJ COMMUNITIES IN THE APPALACHIAN REGION. THE PROJECT WILL USE BOTH MOBILE AND STATIONARY MEASUREMENTS AND WILL EMPLOY A UNIQUELY COMMUNITY-ORIENTED MEASUREMENT STRATEGY. CHEMICAL FINGERPRINTING WILL BE A CENTRAL ELEMENT OF THE PROJECT METHODOLOGY. CHEMICAL FINGERPRINTING WILL IMPROVE BOTH METHANE SOURCE ATTRIBUTION AND CO-EMITTED SPECIES INVENTORIES, OFTEN A HIGH PRIORITY CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO CREATE ECONOMICALLY THRIVING AND ENVIRONMENTALLY BENEFICIAL AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IN URBANIZED LANDSCAPES. THESE AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS ARE LOCATED IN METROPOLITAN COUNTIES AND IN NON-METROPOLITAN COUNTIES ADJACENT TO METRO AREAS, AND ARE VITAL TO THE SUSTAINABILITY OF U.S. AGRICULTURE. OUR CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURE OF THE KIND REQUIRED TO BE ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE IN URBANIZED LANDSCAPES CAN BE ACHIEVED WHILE ENHANCING ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. OUR OVERALL GOAL IS TO MAKE THIS HYPOTHESIS A REALITY WITHIN THE 25-YEAR PERIOD STATED IN THE RFA, USING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED AS A CASE STUDY TRANSLATABLE TO OTHER URBANIZED LANDSCAPES. THIS PROJECT WILL ENGAGE CLOSELY WITH STAKEHOLDERS USING A SHARED DISCOVERY AND CO-LEARNING PROCESS TO ENVISION DESIRED 25-YEAR FUTURES FOR AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IN URBANIZED LANDSCAPES THAT ARE ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE WHILE ENHANCING ECOSYSTEM SERVICES; AND CONDUCT SCENARIO-BUILDING EXERCISES WITH STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY HOW AGRICULTURE IN URBANIZED AREAS WOULD NEED TO EVOLVE TO REALIZE THESE DESIRED FUTURES, AND THE TECHNOLOGIES, MARKETS, AND PUBLIC POLICIES THAT COULD HELP MAKE THE DESIRED FUTURES A REALITY.THIS PROJECT WILL CARRY OUT ITERATIVE RESEARCH PROCESSES WITH STAKEHOLDERS ON INCREASING TFP THROUGH ENLARGED MARKETS IN URBANIZED LANDSCAPES FOR LOCAL, ORGANIC, AND TRACEABLE FOOD PRODUCTS; AND ON IMPROVING NUE AND TFP THROUGH A SUITE OF NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT TOOLS, MODELS, AND ANALYSES FOR FARMERS, COMPANIES SELLING DATA ANALYTICS SERVICES TO FARMERS, LAND USE PLANNERS, AND AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY-MAKERS. WE WILL IMPLEMENT THE RECOMMENDATIONS COMING OUT OF THE SCENARIO-BUILDING EXERCISES THROUGH MODELLING, EXPERIMENTS, SURVEYS, AND DEMONSTRATIONS; BRING THE RESULTS TO STAKEHOLDERS TO EVALUATE; AND CARRY OUT ADDITIONAL RESEARCH BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS. (OCTOBER 2000) (A) THIS AWARD IS A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT AS IT IS ANTICIPATED THERE WILL BE SUBSTANTIAL NASA INVOLVEMENT DURING PERFORMANCE OF THE EFFORT. TOGETHER WITH NEW CO-INVESTIGATORS FROM UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES AND CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP NOVEL APPROACHES TO DETECTING AND CHARACTERIZING LIFE INVESTIGATE BIOSIGNATURES IN MISSION-RELEVANT ECOSYSTEMS AND ANCIENT ROCKS AND EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL FOR BIOSIGNATURES IN EXTRATERRESTRIAL SETTINGS.(1) DEVELOPING NEW BIOSIGNATURES THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF LIFE IS ESSENTIAL FOR PROVIDING A CRITICAL SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR EXPLORATION OF LIFE IN THE COSMOS. OUR EFFORTS WILL FOCUS ON CREATING INNOVATIVE APPROACHES FOR THE ANALYSES OF CELLS AND OTHER ORGANIC MATERIAL FINDING WAYS IN WHICH METAL ABUNDANCES AND ISOTOPE SYSTEMS REFLECT LIFE AND DEVELOPING CREATIVE APPROACHES FOR USING ENVIRONMENTAL DNA TO STUDY PRESENT AND PAST LIFE.(2) BIOSIGNATURES IN RELEVANT MICROBIAL ECOSYSTEMS PSARC WILL INVESTIGATE MICROBIAL LIFE IN SOME OF EARTH S MOST MISSION-RELEVANT ECOSYSTEMS THE DEAD SEA THE CHESAPEAKE IMPACT STRUCTURE THE METHANE SEEPS OF THE EEL RIVER BASIN AND THE GREENLAND GLACIER ICE.(3) BIOSIGNATURES IN ANCIENT ROCKS THE EARTH S ARCHEAN AND PROTEROZOICEONS OFFER THE BEST OPPORTUNITY OF INVESTIGATING A MICROBIAL WORLD SUCH AS MIGHT BE FOUND ELSEWHERE IN THE COSMOS. THE ANCIENT RECORD ON EARTH PROVIDES ON OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT GEOCHEMICAL SIGNATURES ARE PRODUCED BY MICROBIAL LIFE AND HOW THESE SIGNATURES ARE PRESERVED OVER GEOLOGIC TIME.(4) BIOSIGNATURES IN EXTRATERRESTRIAL SETTING.
