TO MEET THIS NEED, EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR DATA SCIENTISTS ARE EXPECTED TO GROW BY 36% OVER THE NEXT DECADE. THE MOST DESIRABLE APPLICANTS FOR THESE POSITIONS WILL BE GRADUATES WHO CAN COLLABORATE EFFECTIVELY WITHIN A TEAM SETTING AND WHO HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH DATA SCIENCE AND THE LABORATORY, FIELD, AND GREENHOUSE SETTINGS WHERE DATA ARE GENERATED.THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES THAT COMBINE DATA SCIENCE AND CROP SCIENCE. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF TWO TRACKS: THE EXPLORERS TRACK, AND THE FELLOWS TRACK. EXPLORERS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO THE APPLICATIONS OF DATA SCIENCE IN CROP SCIENCE THROUGH A WEEK-LONG SUMMER DATA SCIENCE BOOTCAMP WHERE THEY WILL USE COMPUTATIONAL SKILLSETS TO DERIVE MEANING FROM REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES, AND THEY WILL WORK IN TEAMS TO PRESENT THE FINDINGS OF THEIR SHORT PROJECTS. STUDENTS IN THE FELLOWS TRACK WILL BE IMMERSED IN A FULLY FUNDED, TWO-YEAR RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. FELLOWS WILL BE PLACED WITH A PROFESSOR IN A RESEARCH AREA OF THEIR CHOOSING TO GAIN PRACTICAL LABORATORY, GREENHOUSE, AND/OR FIELD EXPERIENCE. THEY WILL WORK WITH THEIR MENTORS TO DESIGN AN INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT THAT COMBINES THESE RESEARCH SKILLS WITH DATA SCIENCE, AND THEY WILL PRESENT THE RESULTS OF THEIR PROJECT TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY AND TO THE PUBLIC. UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT, 200 EXPLORERS AND 16 FELLOWS WILL HAVE BEEN TRAINED.$750,000

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO ADVANCE, REACHING NEW TECHNOLOGICAL MILESTONES THAT WERE ONCE THE TOPIC OF SCIENCE FICTION. WHILE THESE ADVANCEMENTS SHOULD BE CELEBRATED, THEY HAVE ALSO CREATED AN EMERGING PROBLEM IN WORKFORCE TRAINING. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ARE ONLY USEFUL IF A WORKER UNDERSTANDS HOW TO USE THEM AND HOW TO INTERPRET THE DATA THEY GENERATE. HOWEVER, CURRICULAR TOPICS SUCH AS DATA ANALYTICS, GEOSPATIAL SOFTWARE, AND REMOTE SENSING HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN TAUGHT AS UPPER LEVEL COURSES AT FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS. THIS LACK OF ACCESS TO CURRICULUM HAS CREATED A DIGITAL DIVIDE IN OUR WORKFORCE, PLACING BOTH THE EMERGING TECHNICAL WORKFORCE AND THE WORKFORCE IN NEED OF RETRAINING AT A SIGNIFICANT DISADVANTAGE. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO REMOVE THE CURRICULAR BARRIER TO CREATING A TECHNOLOGY- AND DATA-SAVVY WORKFORCE. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK, WE PROPOSE A THREE-PRONGED APPROACH: (1) THE CREATION OF ONLINE AND OPEN-SOURCE TRAINING MATERIALS WHICH MAYBE VIEWED INDEPENDENTLY OR INCORPORATED INTO CURRENT COURSES AT TECHNICAL COLLEGES, (2) THE AVAILABILITY OF REGIONAL FACE-TO-FACE TRAINING WORKSHOPS WHICH COVER THE DATA ACCESS, ANALYSIS, AND DECISION-MAKING CONCEPTS WHICH ARE MOST INTEGRAL TO THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY, AND (3) THE PILOTING OF TWO NEW INDUSTRY-ALIGNED CREDENTIALING PROGRAMS IN DATA ANALYSIS AND GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS). AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS WORK, IT IS EXPECTED THAT NOT ONLY WILL WE HAVE CREATED AND PILOTED A SUSTAINABLE WORKFORCE TRAINING PLATFORM, BUT ALSO TRAINED A MINIMUM OF 250 WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS AND 32 INDUSTRY-CREDENTIALED STUDENTS IN EMERGING DATA AND TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS.$500,000

OPTIMIZED MICROBIAL CONVERSION OF BITUMINOUS COAL TO METHANE FOR IN SITU AND EX SITU APPLICATIONS$499,989

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** BETWEEN 2012 AND 2015, EAR ROTS OF MAIZE CAUSED A PREVENTABLE LOSS OF MORE THAN $3.1 BILLION FOR U.S. FARMERS. ONE PARTICULARLY PROBLEMATIC EAR ROT PATHOGEN IN THE NORTHERN MIDWEST IS GIBBERELLA EAR ROT (GER), LARGELY BECAUSE THE CAUSAL PATHOGEN, FUSARIUM GRAMINEARUM, CAN CAUSE FURTHER LOSS THROUGH THE DEPOSITION OF MYCOTOXINS IN THE GRAIN. A COMMON CONTROL STRATEGY FOR THE PREVENTION OF GER IS PLANTING RESISTANT MAIZE CULTIVARS.GENOMIC MODELING HAS REVOLUTIONIZED PLANT IMPROVEMENT, ENABLING THE SELECTION OF SUPERIOR CULTIVARS BASED ON GENOMIC DATA ALONE. HOWEVER, MOST AGRICULTURALLY IMPORTANT TRAITS, INCLUDING GER RESISTANCE, ARE SUBJECT TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND GENOTYPE-BY-ENVIRONMENT EFFECTS. BY CONSIDERING ONLY GENOMIC DATA, CURRENT GENOMIC SELECTION MODELS FAIL TO ACCOUNT FOR KNOWN SYSTEM DYNAMICS THAT INFLUENCE THE EXPRESSION OF THESE TRAITS. RATHER THAN RELYING ON GENOMIC DATA ALONE TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES FOR THE PREVENTION OF POSTHARVEST LOSS, WE PROPOSE DEVELOPING HOLISTIC, SYSTEMS-BASED MACHINE LEARNING MODELS USING ENVIRONMENTAL, METABOLIC, AND GENOMIC DATA CONCURRENTLY. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT THESE MODELS WILL ENABLE THE IDENTIFICATION OF RESISTANT GENETIC RESOURCES AND CAN PREDICT WHEN GER DISEASE PRESSURE WILL BE AN ISSUE FOR GROWERS. THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE THE FOUNDATION FOR NOVEL MODELING METHODOLOGIES THAT CAN IMPROVE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. WE ENVISION THESE METHODS CAN BE EXTENDED TO MODEL OTHER CROPS AS WELL AS OTHER PATHOGEN AND INSECT PESTS.$499,113
