THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROPOSAL ARE TO PROVIDE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS TO SEARCH FOR THE PRESENCE OF CARBON MATERIALS IN SPACE AND STUDY THEIR EVOLUTION. TO THIS END WE INTEND TO MEASURE IN THE LABORATORY THE SPECTRAL PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHS) AND CARBON-BEARING MOLECULES CLUSTERS AND NANOPARTICLES IN EMISSION USING TWO COMPLEMENTARY HIGHLY-SENSITIVE LASER BASED TECHNIQUES LASER INDUCED FLUORESCENCE (LIF) AND LASER INDUCED INCANDESCENCE (LII). THESE LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS PERFORMED UNDER ASTROPHYSICALLY RELEVANT CONDITIONS WILL HELP DETECT AND CHARACTERIZE THE GAS PHASE MOLECULES AND CLUSTERS AS WELL AS THE SOLID GRAINS (DUST PARTICLES). THE COSMIC SIMULATION FACILITY (COSMIC) DEVELOPED AT NASA AMES WILL BE USED TO STUDY NEUTRAL AND IONIZED MOLECULES AND CLUSTERS IN A PULSED SUPERSONIC JET-COOLED PLASMA EXPANSION I.E. ISOLATED IN A COLLISION-FREE ENVIRONMENT AND AT LOW TEMPERATURE (50-100K) REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INTERSTELLAR ENVIRONMENT. WE INTEND TO BUILD AN EXTENSIVE GAS-PHASE EMISSION DATABASE FOR INTERSTELLAR ANALOGS OF NEUTRAL AND IONIC PAHS PAHCLUSTERS AND LARGE CARBON MOLECULES THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY COMPARED TO SPACE DATA FOR THE UNAMBIGUOUS DETECTION OF SPECIFIC SPECIES IN SPACE. IN PARTICULAR PAH-RELATED PHOTOPRODUCTS SUCH AS HYDROGENATED PAHS (HN-PAHS) NITROGENATED PAHS (PANHS) AND POLYYNYL-SUBSTITUTED PAHS WILL BE CONSIDERED IN THIS PROJECT SINCE THEY ARE PROBABLY PRESENT IN THE ISM AND MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE OBSERVED AROMATIC EMISSION BANDS.$5,929,784

OUR AMES RESEARCH GROUP BEGAN OBTAINING HIGH-RESOLUTION SPECKLE IMAGES OF EXOPLANET HOST STARS DURING THE KEPLER MISSION. SINCE THAT TIME OVER A DECADE AGO WE HAVE CONTINUED THIS PROGRAM MAKING OBSERVATIONS OF THOUSANDS OF EXOPLANET HOST STARS FOR KEPLER K2 TESS AND OTHER EXOPLANET RELATED STARS. OUR EFFORT STARTED AS AND REMAINS A COMMUNITY PROGRAM WITH INPUT TARGET LISTS COMING FROM THE COMMUNITY AND REDUCED DATA BEING ARCHIVED FOR PUBLIC USE AS SOON AS THEY ARE AVAILABLE AFTER EACH RUN. OUR TEAM HAS SHOWN THAT ~50% OF EXOPLANET HOST STARS ARE BINARY (ABOUT 12% OF THESE ARE MULTIPLE) WHICH HAS LED TO THE REALIZATION THAT WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF COMPANION STARS STARS THAT LIE WELL WITHIN 1 ARCSEC AND ARE MOSTLY TRUE BOUND COMPANIONS THE EXOPLANET AND STELLAR PARAMETERS DETERMINED ARE INCORRECT.$4,935,726

THE KEPLER SPACECRAFT LAUNCHED IN 2009 MONITORED OVER 160 000 STARS CONTINUOUSLY FOR FOUR YEARS WITH A PRIMARY SCIENCE GOAL OF UNDERSTANDING THE FREQUENCY OF EXOPLANETS. THE RESULTING DATA PROVIDES A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF HIGH PHOTOMETRIC PRECISION DURATION CONTIGUITY AND SOURCE VOLUME. THE DATA COLLECTED BY THE MISSION AND DERIVED DATA PRODUCTS ARE ARCHIVED AT NASA ARCHIVES. THE KEPLER MISSION ENDED IN 2013 WITH THE FAILURE OF THE SECOND OF FOUR REACTION WHEELS. DEVELOPED OVER THE MONTHS FOLLOWING THIS FAILURE THE K2 MISSION REPRESENTS A NEW CONCEPT FOR SPACECRAFT OPERATIONS THAT ENABLES CONTINUED SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATIONS WITH THE KEPLER SPACE TELESCOPE. K2 BECAME FULLY OPERATIONAL IN JUNE 2014 AND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE OPERATING UNTIL 2018. THE K2 MISSION ENTAILS A SERIES OF SEQUENTIAL 80-DAY LONG OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS OF FIELDS DISTRIBUTED AROUND THE ECLIPTIC PLANE AND OFFERS A PHOTOMETRIC PRECISION APPROACHING THAT OF THE ORIGINAL KEPLER MISSION. THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY HAS OPPORTUNITIES TO BOTH CONSTRUCT K2 OBSERVING PROGRAMS AND MINE THE KEPLER AND K2 ARCHIVAL DATA SET TO PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC RESULTS. THE KEPLER/K2 GUEST OBSERVER (GO) OFFICE IS DEDICATED TO MAXIMIZING THE SCIENTIFIC IMPACT OF THESE MISSIONS THROUGH RESEARCH THAT INCLUDES IDENTIFYING NEW AREAS OF SCIENTIFIC EXPLOITATION FOR K2 LEADING RESEARCH PROJECTS BASED ON KEPLER AND K2 DATA COLLABORATING ON SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS WITH THE K2 GUEST OBSERVERS PROVIDING PROJECT-TAILORED INSTRUMENT CALIBRATIONS DEVELOPING NOVEL DATA REDUCTION AND ANALYSIS ALGORITHMS AND CONSTRUCTING OBSERVATION AND DATA ACQUISITION PLANS.
