THE GOAL OF THIS EDUCATIONAL PROJECT IS TO BUILD, LEVERAGE, OR EXPAND, AS APPLICABLE, A TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM THAT WILL SUPPORT A CLEAN HYDROGEN INDUSTRY.
THE SAN JUAN COLLEGE SCHOOL OF ENERGY INTENDS TO DEVELOP CURRICULUM AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL BE OFFERED AS ADVANCED CERTIFICATES FOR MULTIPLE EXISTING ASSOCIATES DEGREE PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAMS WILL SUPPORT THE PRODUCTION, TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING AND USE OF CLEAN HYDROGEN. THOSE PROGRAMS ARE:
• INDUSTRIAL PROCESS OPERATOR PROGRAM (IPOP)
• INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (MECH)
• INSTRUMENTATION CONTROLS AND ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY (ICE)
• ADVANCED PETROLEUM PRODUCTION OPERATOR PROGRAM (APPO)
• NATURAL GAS COMPRESSION PROGRAM
• OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY (SAFE)
• TRIBAL ENERGY MANAGEMENT STUDIES (TEMS)
• COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSING (CDL)
THE SAN JUAN BASIN IS LOCATED IN THE FOUR CORNERS AREA, THE REGION IN WHICH NEW MEXICO, COLORADO, UTAH AND ARIZONA MEET AND INCLUDES FARMINGTON, NM WHERE SAN JUAN COLLEGE IS LOCATED. THE REGION HAS ABUNDANT RESERVES OF NATURAL GAS, HELIUM AND RARE EARTH MINERALS. MOST OF THE COMPANIES IN OUR REGION MOVING IN THE DIRECTION OF HYDROGEN INTEND TO USE NATURAL GAS AND STEAM METHANE REFORMERS EQUIPPED WITH CARBON CAPTURE DEVICES TO PRODUCE CLEAN HYDROGEN. THEREFORE, THE CURRICULUM WILL ADDRESS NOT ONLY THE PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN, BUT ALSO CARBON CAPTURE.
FOR THE MAJORITY OF OUR PROGRAMS, THE FOCUS OF THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE WILL BE HYDROGEN SAFETY AND SPECIFICALLY HOW TO WORK AROUND AND HANDLE HYDROGEN IN A PARTICULAR JOB FUNCTION. IN OTHER INSTANCES, SUCH AS IN THE IPOP PROGRAM, WE WILL EXPAND UPON AND AUGMENT THE CURRENT AMINE-BASED CURRICULUM AND INTEGRATE OTHER TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS MEMBRANES, THAT ARE EMERGING IN THE CARBON CAPTURE ARENA. IN THE APPO AND NATURAL GAS COMPRESSION PROGRAMS, THE CERTIFICATE WILL INCLUDE HYDROGEN SAFETY AS WELL AS VAPOR RECOVER UNITS WHICH WE ARE WORKING WITH INDUSTRY TO SECURE.
BASED UPON FEEDBACK FROM THE HYDROGEN RELATED PARTNERS TO DATE, THE PROGRAMS AT THE SCHOOL OF ENERGY TRAIN STUDENTS ON THE SKILLS THEY NEED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HYDROGEN SPECIFIC SAFETY. THE SCHOOL WILL ADDRESS THAT WITH AN ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN HYDROGEN SAFETY. TO ENSURE GRADUATES
DE-EE0010164.0000 SAN JUAN COLLEGE, ATTACHMENT 1, STATEMENT OF PROJECT OBJECTIVES WILL HAVE THE SKILLS TO TAKE THEM INTO THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, THE SCHOOL WILL AUGMENT AND EXPAND ITS CURRENT AMINE-BASED CARBON CAPTURE TRAINING WITH THE ADDITION OF MEMBRANE OR OTHER TECHNOLOGIES. CONSULTANTS AND SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WITH A BROADER VIEW OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES CAN ASSIST FACULTY IN DETERMINING WHAT ARE THE MOST PROMISING TECHNOLOGIES UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND WHICH SHOULD BE INCLUDED WHEN CONSIDERING CURRICULUM AUGMENTATION.
BY INCLUDING AUGMENTED CURRICULUM FROM THE BASE DEGREE IN THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE, PROGRAM ALUMNI WILL BE ABLE TO REFRESH ELEMENTS THEY MAY NOT HAVE USED PREVIOUSLY OR RECENTLY IN THEIR CAREERS. IN THIS WAY, SAN JUAN COLLEGE CAN PRODUCE EMERGING WORKFORCE AS WELL AS RETRAIN AND UPSKILL INCUMBENT WORKERS.
OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:
* CONTINUED COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY TO ENSURE THAT THE SKILLS GRADUATES OF THE ADVANCEDCERTIFICATE PROGRAM POSSESS WILL ENABLE THEM TO WORK AS TECHNICIANS IN HYDROGEN RELATEDENTITIES THEREBY SECURING HIGH-WAGE JOBS IN A TRANSITIONING ENERGY INDUSTRY.
* CONTINUED AND EXPANDED OUTREACH TO MINORITY, UNDERSERVED, AND TRANSITIONINGPOPULATIONS TO ENSURE ONGOING ACCESS TO THE CLEAN ENERGY CAREERS OF THE FUTURE.
* DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED CREDENTIALS AVAILABLE TO PAST AND FUTURE GRADUATES IN THE AREASOF HYDROGEN SAFETY AND CARBON CAPTURE.
* PROVISION TO OFFER EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN THIS FIELD OF STUDY.
