THE EXPORTS SCIENCE PLAN CHARACTERIZES 5 PATHWAYS FOR THE EXPORT OF NPP FROM THE SURFACE OCEAN INTO THE INTERIOR TWO OF WHICH ARE MEDIATED BY MESOZOOPLANKTON: PRODUCTION AND SINKING OF FECAL PELLETS AND ACTIVE TRANSPORT BY VERTICAL MIGRATION. WE PROPOSE TO ADDRESS EXPORTS SCIENCE QUESTIONS SQT (TA AND TB) AND SQ2 (2A B D) BY CONDUCTING FIELD-BASED PROCESS STUDIES OF MESOZOOPLANKTON-MEDIATED EXPORT IN THE NE PACIFIC AND N ATLANTIC OCEANS. ARPA-E FUNDS TRANSFORMATIONAL RESEARCH. EXISTING ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES GENERALLY PROGRESS ON ESTABLISHED
“LEARNING CURVES” WHERE REFINEMENTS TO A TECHNOLOGY AND THE ECONOMIES OF SCALE THAT ACCRUE AS
MANUFACTURING AND DISTRIBUTION DEVELOP DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE COST/PERFORMANCE METRIC IN A GRADUAL
FASHION. THIS CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT OF A TECHNOLOGY IS IMPORTANT TO ITS INCREASED COMMERCIAL DEPLOYMENT
AND IS APPROPRIATELY THE FOCUS OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR OR THE APPLIED TECHNOLOGY OFFICES WITHIN DOE. BY
CONTRAST, ARPA-E SUPPORTS TRANSFORMATIVE RESEARCH THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE FUNDAMENTALLY NEW
LEARNING CURVES. ARPA-E TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS TYPICALLY START WITH COST/PERFORMANCE ESTIMATES WELL ABOVE

ARPA-E FUNDS TECHNOLOGY WITH THE POTENTIAL TO BE DISRUPTIVE IN THE MARKETPLACE. THE MERE CREATION OF A
NEW LEARNING CURVE DOES NOT ENSURE MARKET PENETRATION. RATHER, THE ULTIMATE VALUE OF A TECHNOLOGY IS
DETERMINED BY THE MARKETPLACE, AND IMPACTFUL TECHNOLOGIES ULTIMATELY BECOME DISRUPTIVE – THAT IS, THEY
ARE WIDELY ADOPTED AND DISPLACE EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE MARKETPLACE OR CREATE ENTIRELY NEW
MARKETS. ARPA-E UNDERSTANDS THAT DEFINITIVE PROOF OF MARKET DISRUPTION TAKES TIME, PARTICULARLY FOR

MARINE CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL (MCDR) WILL BE AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF A FUTURE NEGATIVE EMISSIONS
INDUSTRY, WHICH ALONGSIDE EMISSIONS REDUCTION IS NECESSARY TO RESTRICT CLIMATE WARMING TO LESS THAN 2°C
AND AVOID GLOBAL, IRREVERSIBLE, AND CATASTROPHIC CHANGES CAUSED BY THIS TEMPERATURE RISE. THIS PROGRAM
SEEKS TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MCDR INDUSTRY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCALABLE
MEASUREMENT, REPORTING AND VALIDATION (MRV) TECHNOLOGIES. MRV MUST BE OF SUFFICIENT QUALITY TO QUANTIFY
CARBON DRAWDOWN MAGNITUDES, THE DEGREE OF PERMANENCE, AND BOUND THE UNCERTAINTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THESE
PARAMETERS SO THAT CARBON MARKETS CAN ASCERTAIN CREDIT QUALITY AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS CAN MAKE

CONTINUED EXPANSION IS CONSTRAINED BY AVAILABLE LABOR, WHICH, THOUGH A PERENNIAL ISSUE, HAS BEEN EXACERBATED RECENTLY. TWO PATHOGENS, CALLED DERMO AND MSX, ARE THE CAUSE OF OF SIGNIFICANT MORTALITY IN WILD AND AQUACULTURE OYSTERSIN THE MANY STATES ALONG THE EAST COASTAND BEYOND, AND AS SUCH, BETTER DISEASE-RESISTANT STOCKS ARE REQUIRED.GOALS: THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THERELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TWO SIGNIFICANT OYSTERPATHOGENS AND PERFORMANCE OF EASTERN OYSTERS GROWN IN THE FIELD DESTINED FOR HARVESTING AND SALE.SPECIFICALLY, AN ASSESSMENT OF THE HERITABILITY OF RESISTANCE TO EACH PATHOGEN SEPARATELY, OR COMBINED, WILL ENABLE THE DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED DISEASE-RESISTANCE BREEDING STRATEGIES.OBJECTIVES/METHODS: THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY ARE TOMEASURE THE VARIANCE INSURVIVAL OF GENETICALLY-UNIQUE OYSTER GROUPS INFIELD TRIALS AT LOCATIONS WHERE THE TWO DISEASES ARE NATURALLY PRESENT IN THE ENVIRONMENT. UNIQUE GENETIC GROUPS OF OYSTERS WITH A KNOWNPEDIGREE WILL BE THE FOUNDATIONAL MATERIAL FOR THIS WORK. THE NUMBER OF OYSTERSTHAT GET INFECTED WITHIN EACH GROUP AS WELL AS HOW SEVERELY THEYARE INFECTED, INCLUDING THE SEVERITY OF THE HOSTRESPONSE, WILL BE STUDIED USING GENETIC TECHNIQUES AND TECHNIQUES THAT ALLOW MICROSCOPIC EXAMINIATION OF PRESERVED OYSTER TISSUES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT GENETIC GROUPS (PEDIGREE INFORMATION), FIELD SURVIVAL, GROWTH AND DISEASE INFORMATION WILL BE COMBINED USING SOPHISTICATED MATHEMATICAL MODELING AND PREDICTIVE APPROACHES.THESE RESULTS WILL CLARIFY HOW THE DISEASES EFFECT OYSTER PERFORMANCE (CORRELATION VALUES) AND HOW EASILY IT IS TO BREED FOR RESISTANCE TO ONE OR BOTH PATHOGENS (HERITABILITY VALUES).OUTCOMES/IMPACTS: UPON COMPLETION OF THIS RESEARCH,THE AQUACULTURE GENETICS AND BREEDING TECHNOLOGY CENTER AT VIMS WILLCREATE NEW DISEASE-RESISTANT OYSTER STOCKS. THESE STOCKS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO TO REGIONAL COMMERCIAL HATCHERIES FOR PROPAGATION AND SALES OF OYSTER LARVAE AND SEED WITH SUPERIOR DISEASE RESISTANCE. IMPROVED OYSTER LINES WILL INCREASE THE SECURITY AND PROFITABILITY OF US OYSTER AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION.$306,292

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** INFECTIOUS HEMATOPOIETIC NECROSIS VIRUS (IHNV) IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM FOR THE RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS) AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY, RESULTING IN LARGE SCALE PRODUCTION LOSSES AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIP. SELECTIVE BREEDING OF FISH FOR RESISTANCE TO IHNV OFFERS A POWERFUL OPTION FOR MANAGEMENT OF THIS DEVASTATING PATHOGEN AND MITIGATION OF ITS IMPACTS. IN PARTICULAR, SELECTIVE BREEDING FOR FISH THAT ARE RESISTANT TO INFECTION AND TRANSMISSION IS LIKELY TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY, BECAUSE IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FACILITATE VIRUS ERADICATION FROM PRODUCTION FACILITIES. IN THIS PROJECT, WE PLAN TO QUANTIFY VARIATION IN IHNV TRANSMISSION RESISTANCE ACROSS RAINBOW TROUT GENETIC LINEAGES (FAMILIES) AND ESTIMATE THE HERITABILITY OF THE TRAIT. WE WILL THE DETERMINE IF TRANSMISSION RESISTANCE IS LINKED TO OTHER FARM PERFORMANCE TRAITS SUCH AS RESISTANCE TO CLINICAL DISEASE, GROWTH, YIELD, AND FILLET QUALITY. THIS WILL LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE CAMPAIGNS TO SELECTIVE BREED RAINBOW TROUT FOR IHNV TRANSMISSION RESISTANCE. THE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN A LEADING EXPERT IN IHNV BIOLOGY, ANDREW WARGO, PHD AT THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCE, AND THE CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICER, JESSE TRUSHENSKI, PHD AT A LARGE RAINBOW TROUT AQUACULTURE COMPANY, RIVERENCE HOLDINGS. RESULTS WILL BE DISSEMINATED ACROSS THE SALMONID AQUACULTURE AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT COMMUNITIES THROUGH PRESENTATIONS AT PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS, INDUSTRY FORUMS, AND SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS; AS WELL AS THROUGH PUBLICATIONS IN TRADE AND SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS FOR DISSEMINATION TO THE LARGER COMMUNITY. COLLECTIVELY, THIS PROJECT WILL NOT ONLY BOLSTER IHNV MANAGEMENT IN SALMONID AQUACULTURE, BUT PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK FOR SELECTIVE BREEDING OF TRANSMISSION RESISTANCE THAT COULD BE APPLIED TO A VARIETY OF AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS.$300,000
