Abstract

UCLA has established a regional alliance of the LA Unified School District (LAUSD), the UCLA Graduate School of Education and the UCLA Graduate School of Engineering. The University has been awarded a Broadening Participation in Computing planning grant that will enable the alliance to design activities aimed at increasing the numbers of African-American, Latino/a, and Female High School students studying Computer Science. The alliance will build on earlier related projects which significantly increased the number of Advanced Placement (AP) CS courses offered in the LAUSD in 2003-2004; significantly increased the enrolment of women, Latino/a-s and Pilipinos in these courses; trained teachers in AP CS; and brought together LAUSD district administrators, principles, teachers and UCLA faculty.
