WE PROPOSE TO COLLABORATIVELY UPDATE THE AEROSOL OBSERVING CAPABILITY OF HIGH-ALTITUDE NASA AIRCRAFT BY BUILDING CALIBRATING AND FLIGHT-TESTING A UTLS AEROSOL MEASUREMENT PACKAGE (UTLS-AMP). THE INSTRUMENTS THAT COMPRISE THE UTLS-AMP ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. NMASS (BROCK ET AL. 2000) 2. ULTRA-HIGH SENSITIVITY AEROSOL SPECTROMETER (UHSAS; CAI ET AL. 2008)3. PRINTED OPTICAL PARTICLE SPECTROMETER (POPS; GAO ET AL. 2016)4. PASSIVE NEAR-ISOKINETIC INLET (PNII; JONSSON ET AL. 1996). AS PART OF THIS PROPOSED WORK EACH OF THESE INSTRUMENTS WILL BE UPDATED WITH MODERN COMPONENTS MODIFIED TO OPERATE ON AIRCRAFT IN THE UTLS AND FLIGHT-TESTED ON APPROPRIATE AIRCRAFT. THE UHSAS WILL REPLACE THE FCAS INSTRUMENT WHILE A NEWLY-DEVELOPED POPS INSTRUMENT WILL EXTEND THE SIZING RANGE OF THE PACKAGE. THIS WILL ALLOW CHARACTERIZATION OF UTLS PARTICLES FROM 4 TO 3000 NM DIAMETER SPECIFICATIONS THAT DIRECTLY APPLY TO OBSERVATIONS OF NEWLY FORMED PARTICLES TO CONVECTIVELY TRANSPORTED DUST. THE PACKAGE WILL BE FULLY CALIBRATED WITH UPDATED HARDWARE READY TO FACILITATE RAPID RESPONSE TO EVENTS LIKE A VOLCANIC ERUPTION. MOST IMPORTANTLY PROJECT SUCCESS RELIES HEAVILY ON A DIRECT COLLABORATION BETWEEN DR. CHUCK WILSON FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER AEROSOL GROUP AND THE NASA LANGLEY RESEARCH GROUP (LARGE). THIS INCLUDES SHARING OF DATA REDUCTION ALGORITHMS LABORATORY-CALIBRATION TECHNIQUES UNIQUE TO THE LOW-PRESSURE ENVIRONMENT OF THE UTLS AND THE USE OF A SPECIALIZED AEROSOL INLET (PNII) DESIGNED FOR NASA HIGH-ALTITUDE AIRCRAFT. THE LARGE GROUP HAS A LONG-HISTORY OF AEROSOL MICROPHYSICAL CHEMICAL AND OPTICAL OBSERVATIONS AND WILL CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF UTLS AEROSOL MICROPHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS AFTER PROJECT COMPLETION.

AGRICULTURE IS ONE OF THE MOST PERSISTENT INDUSTRIES AS A RESULT OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF INNOVATION. THE ALABAMA (AL) AG INDUSTRY IS DIVERSE, STRONG IN ANIMAL AG, CROPS, AND CATFISH IN ADDITION TO AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND FORESTS, ACCOUTING FOR $54.9 BILLION IN SALES AND 20% OF THE STATE'S WORKFORCE IN 2016. YET, THE DEMANDS FOR FOOD, FIBER AND FUEL PERSISTS DESPITE THE MODERNIZATION OF AGRICULTURE, INCLUDING DATA-DRIVEN TECHNOLOGIES ROOTED IN A STRONG COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) FOUNDATION. WHILE AL HAS TAKEN SIGNIFICANT STEPS TOWARDS ADVANCING DIGITAL LITERACY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE, THE STATE IS IN ITS INFANCY WITH REGARD TO OFFERING COMPUTER SCIENCE, HAVING A STATE TASK FORCE ON THE MATTER ONLY ESTABLISHED IN 2017 AND ONLY 46% OF ALL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS TEACHING A FOUNDATIONAL CS COURSE. MUCH K-12 EDUCATOR TRAINING HAS BEEN THROUGH INFORMAL CHANNELS, AS ONLY ONE UNIVERSITY IN THE STATE PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A COURSE SPECIFIC CS ENDORSEMENT. IN AL (2020), 2196 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPLETED AP CS EXAMS OF WHICH ONLY 23% WERE UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES. THUS, THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO 1) ESTABLISH PATHWAY FOR A COURSE SPECIFIC CS ENDORSEMENT FOR PRE-SERVICE AND IN SERVICE K-12 EDUCATORS AND 2) PROMOTE THE APPLICATION OF CS TO ADDRESS AG ISSUES THROUGH A DIGITAL AGRICULTURE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE. COLLECTIVELY, THESE EFFORTS MAY LEAD TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FULL CS ENDORSEMENT AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DIVERSE, WELL-TRAINED AGRICULTURE WORKFORCE.

ELECTROMAGNETIC ION CYCLOTRON (EMIC) WAVES ARE PERVASIVE PLASMA WAVES THAT CAN SCATTER ENERGETIC PARTICLES AND HEAT COLD PARTICLES. PAST WORK HAS ALSO HINTED AT ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN PLASMA COMPOSITION AND WAVES OBSERVED AT DIFFERENT MAGNETOSPHERIC LOCATIONS. THE PRIMARY SCIENCE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO SPECIFICALLY INVESTIGATE THE LOW-ENERGY PLASMA COMPOSITION AND ITS EFFECTS ON EMIC WAVE PROPERTIES USING MAGNETOSPHERIC MULTISCALE'S DISTINCTIVE INSTRUMENTATION AND MULTI-SATELLITE WAVE AND PARTICLE MEASUREMENT CAPABILITIES. WE WILL ANALYZE MMS PARTICLE AND WAVE MEASUREMENTS WHEN EMIC WAVES ARE PRESENT. WE WILL INCLUDE TIMES WHEN FAST PLASMA FLOWS (CONVECTION ULF WAVES IONOSPHERIC OUTFLOWS) ACCELERATE THE USUALLY HIDDEN COLD PLASMA CORE INTO THE ENERGY RANGE MEASURED BY THE PARTICLE INSTRUMENTS. SUCH FLOWS ALONG OR ACROSS THE MAGNETIC FIELD ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO MEASURE THE FULL LOW-ENERGY PLASMA COMPOSITION (FULL DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS PER ION SPECIES) AND FURTHER ANALYZE EFFECTS OF MULTIPLE ION SPECIES ON EMIC WAVE PROPERTIES. WE WILL APPLY PUBLIC MMS MISSION DATASETS (THAT ARE AVAILABLE 30 DAYS PRIOR STEP-2 DEADLINE) DURING SINGLE SATELLITE AND MULTI-SATELLITE EMIC WAVE ACTIVITY TOWARDS THIS INVESTIGATION. THIS INCLUDES APPLICATION OF DATA GATHERED TO TESTS OF LINEAR THEORY OF EMIC WAVES FOR VARIOUS MAGNETOSPHERIC LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITY CONDITIONS. MMS DATA FOR APPLICATION TO THIS STUDY APPEAR BELOW. OUTCOMES WILL HAVE BROADER IMPACTS LIKE PROVIDING CONTEXT FOR PAST AND ONGOING THEMIS MEASUREMENTS. BECAUSE PLASMA COMPOSITION REGULATES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EMIC WAVES IN SCATTERING ENERGETIC PARTICLES THE OUTCOMES ARE APPLICABLE TO HIGH PRIORITY SCIENCE GOALS OF THE VAN ALLEN PROBES MISSION.
