THIS PROJECT WILL DEMONSTRATE POWER TO HYDROGEN’S (P2H2) ADVANCED LIQUID ALKALINE-BASED CELL DESIGN AT A COMMERCIAL-APPLICABLE SCALE (250-KW STACK MODULES) WHILE DEVELOPING THE U.S. SUPPLIER BASE CAPABLE OF GIGAWATT (GW)-SCALE MANUFACTURING. WHILE THE PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPMENT FOR P2H2’S CELL DESIGN, THE SUPPLIER BASE DEVELOPMENT WILL BE DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO OTHER DOMESTIC PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE (PEM) AND ADVANCED LIQUID ALKALINE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS (OEM). KEY HIGH-LEVEL OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES WILL INCLUDE: 1. DEVELOP REQUIREMENTS AND ESTABLISH A DESIGN AND COMPONENT SUPPLIER BASE CAPABLE OF GW-SCALE MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES FOR BI-POLAR PLATE ASSEMBLIES (90 ASSEMBLIES/HR), ELECTRODES (6 M2/HR), MEMBRANE/SEAL ASSEMBLIES (90/HR), AND STACK ASSEMBLY (1 STACK PER 8-HR WORKDAY PER LINE). 2. CONFIRM THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE P2H2’S AND DOE’S ELECTROLYZER COST TARGET OF <$50/KW 3. VERIFY THE TECHNOLOGY PERFORMANCE IN CUSTOMER AND THIRD-PARTY TESTS; EXPECTED OUTCOME OF 1.5 A/CM2 AT 1.8 V WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY DYNAMIC LOAD FOLLOWING CAPABILITY. THE HIGH-LEVEL OBJECTIVES WILL BE ACHIEVED WITH THE FOLLOWING SUB-GOALS IN THE RELEVANT BUDGET PERIODS: 1. M1 – M12: DEMONSTRATE GENERATION 1 OF PRODUCTION READY COMPONENTS IN A 30-CELL STACK THAT MEETS PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS. DOWNSELECT COMPONENT PRODUCTION APPROACHES FOR BUDGET PERIOD 2 AND 3. 2. M13 – M24: DEMONSTRATE GENERATION 2 OF PRODUCTION READY COMPONENTS IN A > 100 CELL STACK THAT MEETS PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS. 3. M25 – M36: DEMONSTRATE GW-SCALE PRODUCTION RATES AND VALIDATE PERFORMANCE OF THOSE COMPONENTS IN CUSTOMER PILOT.
