THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO MEASURE THE STABLE STRONTIUM (D88/86SR) AND CALCIUM ISOTOPE (D44/40CA) COMPOSITION OF NEOPROTEROZOIC POST GLACIAL (MARINOAN) CAP CARBONATES. THESE MEASUREMENTS HOLD GREAT PROMISE TO BETTER RESOLVE THE BALANCE BETWEEN GLOBAL WEATHERING AND CARBONATE BURIAL RATES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE MASSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES THAT FOLLOWED THE SNOWBALL EARTH PERIOD AND PRECEDED THE EDIACARAN DIVERSIFICATION OF LIFE. THE NEOPROTEROZOIC ERA (1000-542 MA) WAS A TIME PERIOD OF EXTREME CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL AND CLIMATIC CHANGE THAT CULMINATED IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ENVIRONMENT CAPABLE OF SUSTAINING ANIMALS. THESE CHANGES INCLUDE MASSIVE PERTURBATIONS TO THE GEOCHEMICAL CYCLES OF CARBON AND SULFUR (HALVERSON ET AL. 2005; HURTGEN ET AL. 2006; FIKE ET AL. 2006) MULTIPLE GLOBAL-SCALE GLACIATIONS IN THE CRYOGENIAN PERIOD (~720-635; HOFFMAN ET AL. 1998; MACDONALD ET AL. 2010) AND AN OXYGENATION EVENT TOWARDS THE CLOSE OF THE ERA (~580 MA) THAT MAY BE LINKED TO THE EVOLUTION AND DIVERSIFICATION OF METAZOA (FIKE ET AL. 2006; CANFIELD ET AL. 2007; MCFADDEN ET AL. 2008; SCOTT ET AL. 2008; SAHOO ET AL. 2012). THE CARBON ISOTOPE RECORD OF MARINE CARBONATES (D13C) TRACKS NEOPROTEROZOIC GLACIAL EVENTS IN THE FORM OF LARGE NEGATIVE ANOMALIES THAT PUNCTUATE SUSTAINED INTERVALS OF RELATIVELY HIGH VALUES (FIG. 1). THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR D13C VARIATION THROUGH THIS TIME INTERVAL REMAIN AMBIGUOUS (KNOLL ET AL. 1986 KAUFMAN ET AL. 1997; KNAUTH AND KENNEDY 2009; DERRY 2010; SCHRAG ET AL. 2013).
