THE HIGH SPECTRAL RESOLUTION LIDAR TECHNIQUE PIONEERED BY THE PI THE PI OF THIS PROPOSAL (ET AL. 2005) IS CAPABLE OF DIRECTLY MEASURING BOTH THE AEROSOL EXTINCTION AND BACKSCATTER COEFFICIENT PROVIDING A UNIQUE GROUND BASED CAPABILITY WHICH IN COLLABORATION WITH A PROFESSOR AT THE SCHOOL OF EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AT SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GREATLY ENHANCE THE GROUND BASED LIDAR CAPABILITIES DURING KORUS-AQ. FOR THIS REASON WE PROPOSE TO DEPLOY THE UW HIGH SPECTRAL RESOLUTION LIDAR (HSRL) TO THE LABORATORY IN SEOUL SOUTH KOREA DURING KORUS-AQ PROVIDING COINCIDENT OBSERVATIONS WITH THE COLLABORATOR'S LIDAR SYSTEMS. WE EXPECT THIS COLLABORATION TO GREATLY ENHANCE THE UTILITY OF THE GROUND BASED LIDARCAPABILITY INCLUDING: - CONTINUOUS DAY/NIGHT MEASUREMENTS OF THE VERTICAL PROFILE OF CLOUD AND AEROSOL EXTINCTION AND BACKSCATTER COEFFICIENT AND PARTICULATE DEPOLARIZATION RATIO AT 532 NM AND ATTENUATED BACKSCATTER COEFFICIENT AT 1064 NM. - A REFERENCE DATA SET TO INTER-COMPARE TO THE KOREAN MIE LIDAR RETRIEVALS. IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MIE LIDAR INVERSION (IE IMPROVED LIDAR RATIO ESTIMATES) BASED ON THIS WORK CAN THEN EXTENDED TO THE BROADER LIDAR NETWORK - A HSRL L2 CLOUD AND AEROSOL PRODUCT CUSTOMIZED FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING THE UW HSRL SYSTEM IS DESIGNED RUN CONTINUOUSLY FROM REMOTE LOCATIONS AND HAS PROVEN TO BE A VALUABLE ASSET DURING PREVIOUS NASA FIELD CAMPAIGNS WITH NASA FUNDED DEPLOYMENTS IN BOTH SINGAPORE AND HUNTSVILLE AL FOR THE SEAC4RS MISSION.
