TRACKING TIME SERIES PRICE VARIATION IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO GOVERNMENTS, INDUSTRIES, RESEARCHERS AND CONSUMERS FOR INFLATION SURVEILLANCE, AND COST-OF-LIVING (COL) ADJUSTMENTS TO SALARY AND WAGE, PUBLIC SAFETY NET PROGRAM PAYMENTS, AND OTHER INCOME PAYMENTS. OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE IS THE WITHIN-COUNTRY COMPARISON OF PRICES ACROSS LOCATIONS. HOWEVER, THE LATTER IS DONE LESS OFTEN BECAUSE OF A PREVIOUS LACK OF PROPER DATA. THE ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SPATIAL PRICE DIFFERENCE HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED FOR FEDERAL TAX DISTORTION (ALBOUY 2009), POVERTY RANKING (JOLLIFFE 2006), AND PURCHASING POWER OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLE VOUCHER UNDER THE WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN (WIC) PROGRAM (?AKIR ET AL. 2018) AND FOOD BENEFIT UNDER THE SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP) (ZHEN ET AL. 2018A). A COL INDEX - THE TYPE ECONOMISTS ARE MOST INTERESTED IN - IS AN INDEX THAT TRACKS CHANGES IN THE COST OF MAINTAINING A FIXED STANDARD OF LIVING. A PANEL INDEX TRACKS TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL COST VARIATIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY.THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A PUBLIC-USE PANEL PRICE DATABASE AT THE USDA FOOD CODE LEVEL FOR SMALL AREAS IN THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES OVER THE 2008−2017 PERIOD. TO THIS END, WE WILL LEVERAGE BIG DATA ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF 450,000 FOOD BARCODES AT OVER 40,000 FOOD RETAILERS AND BY 60,000 HOUSEHOLDS, THE CONSUMER EXPENDITURE SURVEY (CES), SURVEY SAMPLING METHODS, STATE-OF-THE-ART SCANNER DATA-BASED PANEL PRICE INDEXES, AND ADVANCED GIS TOOLS. THE PRICE DATABASE WILL BE POSITIONED TO SUPPORT A BROAD SPECTRUM OF RESEARCH ON FOOD AND NUTRITION POLICY, FOOD MARKET AND PRICE, AND CONSUMER DEMAND. AS A PUBLIC GOOD, THIS DATABASE WILL BE A VALUABLE ADDITION TO, BUT NOT A DUPLICATE OF, EXISTING FOOD PRICE STATISTICS REPORTED BY THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS (BLS), BUREAU OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS (BEA), ECONOMIC RESEARCH SERVICE (ERS), AND COUNCIL FOR COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC RESEARCH (C2ER). **AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** TUTA ABSOLUTA (MEYRICK 1971), COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS TOMATO LEAF MINER, TOMATO BORER, OR THE SOUTH AMERICAN TOMATO PINWORM, IS ONE OF THE MOST DEVASTATING PESTS OF TOMATO (BAHAMONDES AND MALLEA 1969; POVOLNY 1994; ?URI? ET. AL 2014; BIONDI ET AL. 2018). FRESH AND PROCESSING TOMATOES REPRESENT A MASSIVE ECONOMIC INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE WITH AN ESTIMATED 241 MILLION METRIC TONS OF TOMATOES HARVESTED IN 2017 (FAOSTAT 2017). ALTERNATIVE HOSTS OF T. ABSOLUTA INCLUDE OTHER SOLANACEOUS PLANTS SUCH AS POTATOES AND EGGPLANTS, WHICH ALSO REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT AGRICULTURAL CROPS. NATIVE TO SOUTH AMERICA, T. ABSOLUTA WAS CONFINED TO THAT CONTINENT UNTIL IT WAS IDENTIFIED IN SPAIN IN 2006 (DESNEUX ET AL. 2010; GUILLEMAUD ET AL. 2015). IT HAS NOW SPREAD TO ALMOST EVERY CONTINENT, THREATENING COUNTRIES WHOSE ECONOMIES AND FOOD SECURITY RELY HEAVILY ON TOMATOES (CABI 2016; CAMPOS ET AL. 2017; MUTAMISWA ET AL. 2017; BIONDI ET AL. 2018; MANSOUR ET AL. 2018; HAN ET AL. 2018; 2019). THIS INSECT CAUSES DAMAGE TO ALL DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES OF ITS HOST PLANT, LEADING TO CROP LOSSES AS HIGH AS 80 TO 100% (BIONDI ET AL. 2018; GODFREY ET AL. 2018). ALTHOUGH T. ABSOLUTA HAS YET TO BE FOUND IN THE UNITED STATES (U.S.), WHICH MAKES UP A LARGE PORTION OF THE TOMATO PRODUCTION IN THE WORLD, COMPUTER MODELS PROJECT A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF INVASION (USDA 2011; TONNANG ET AL. 2015; BIONDI ET AL. 2018). TO HALT THE CONTINUED SPREAD OF T. ABSOLUTA AND MINIMIZE ECONOMIC LOSS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TOMATO SUPPLY CHAIN AS WELL AS POTATO AND EGGPLANT PRODUCTION, ACCURATE AND EFFICIENT METHODS TO IDENTIFY T. ABSOLUTA AND STRENGTHEN SURVEILLANCE PROGRAMS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. CURRENT IDENTIFICATION OF T. ABSOLUTA RELIES ON EXAMINATION OF MORPHOLOGY AND ASSESSMENT OF HOST PLANT DAMAGE, WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO DIFFERENTIATE FROM THAT OF NATIVE GELECHIIDAE PESTS. TO ADDRESS THIS NEED, WE HAVE RECENTLY SEQUENCED THE GENOMES OF T. ABSOLUTA AND TWO CLOSELY RELATED GELECHIIDAE THAT ARE COMMONLY FOUND IN CALIFORNIA, THE TOMATO PINWORM KEIFERIA LYCOPERSICELLA (WALSHINGHAM 1897) AND THE POTATO TUBER MOTH PHTHORIMAEA OPERCULELLA (ZELLER 1873) (TABULOC ET AL. 2019). THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO LEVERAGE THESE NEW GENOMIC RESOURCES WE HAVE DEVELOPED TO DEVELOP RAPID MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS TO DIFFERENTIATE T. ABSOLUTA OF ALL LIFE STAGES FROM CLOSELY RELATED GELECHIIDS THAT ARE NATIVE TO THE U.S. SPECIFICALLY, WE WILL (1) SEQUENCE GENOMES OF GELECHIIDS THAT ARE MORPHOLOGICALLY SIMILAR TO T. ABSOLUTA, IN ADDITION TO SPECIES WE HAVE ALREADY SEQUENCED, (2) PERFORMED BIOINFORMATIC ANALYSIS TO DESIGN SPECIES DIAGNOSTICS, (3) VALIDATE TAQMAN AND CRISPR-BASED DIAGNOSTICS IN THE LABORATORY, AND (4) VALIDATE IN-FIELD CRISPR-BASED MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS FOR SPECIES IDENTIFICATION. MORE EFFICIENT AND ACCURATE DIAGNOSTICS WILL DECREASE TIME REQUIRED FOR POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION BY REGULATORS AND REDUCE LENGTH OF COSTLY QUARANTINE HOLDS FOR THE CROP INDUSTRIES. FURTHERMORE, DEVELOPMENT OF IN-FIELD DIAGNOSTICS WILL FACILITATE MONITORING EFFORTS BY CROP CONSULTANTS AND REGULATORY PERSONNEL, ENABLE PROMPT RESPONSE TO PREVENT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF T. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED WORK ARE: 1. CAREFULLY CHARACTERIZE THE TOOL/PART INTERFACE FOR FRICTION STIR WELDING OF HIGH STRENGTH ALUMINUM ALLOYS USING A SIMPLE EXPERIMENT. 2. DEVELOP A MODEL OF LOCAL FLOW STRESSES AT THE TOOL/PART INTERFACE USING THE DATA FROM OBJECTIVE #1. 3. INTEGRATE THE INTERFACE MODEL INTO A PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OF THE FSW PROCESS. 4. VALIDATE THE FSW MODEL RESULTS FOR TORQUE REACTIVE LOAD AND TEMPERATURES FOR STANDARD FSW TOOLS AND FOR A SELF-REACTING FSW TOOL. IN PRIOR EFFORTS THE FRICTION LEVEL HAS BEEN AN ADJUSTABLE PARAMETER USED TO "TUNE" A FINITE ELEMENT MODEL FOR FSW. HOWEVER THIS SIMPLE TUNING APPROACH NEGLECTS THE UNDERLYING PHYSICS AT THE INTERFACE AND DOES NOT PROVIDE ACCURATE PREDICTIONS FOR ALL OF THE CRITICAL PHENOMENA THAT WOULD RENDER THE MODEL TRULY PREDICTIVE AND USEFUL FOR DEVELOPMENT. FOR EXAMPLE IF THE MODEL IS "TUNED" FOR AN ACCURATE PREDICTION OF TEMPERATURES THEN THE REACTIVE LOAD IS OFTEN OVERESTIMATED. THIS RESULTS IN INACCURATE STRESS PREDICTIONS WITHIN THE PART. THE PHYSICS AND MECHANICS OF HEAT GENERATION AND MATERIAL DEFORMATION AT THE SCALES AND TEMPERATURES AT WHICH THEY OCCUR IN FSW HAS NOT BEEN ADEQUATELY STUDIED AND UNDERSTOOD. WHILE THE FLOW STRESS IN THE BULK MATERIAL CAN BE CHARACTERIZED BY TENSION TESTING COMPRESSION TESTING OR TORSION TESTING THE INTERFACE MATERIAL FLOW STRESS UNDERGOES LARGE AMOUNTS OF SHEAR AND THEREFORE RECRYSTALLIZATION WHICH CAN DRAMATICALLY INFLUENCE THE LOCAL FLOW STRESS. RATHER THAN TRYING TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE MICROSTRUCTURE EVOLUTION AT THE INTERFACE OUR APPROACH WILL BE TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE EXPERIMENT THAT WILL ALLOW FOR CHARACTERIZING THE LOCAL FLOW STRESSES AT THE INTERFACE WHICH ARE THE PRIMARY DATA NEEDED FOR ACCURATE MODELING WITHOUT THE NEED FOR "TUNING" BY FREQUENT ADJUSTMENT OF A FRICTION COEFFICIENT. DATA FROM THE EXPERIMENT WILL BE USED AS INPUT TO AN INVERSE PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION SCHEME THAT WILL PROVIDE LOCAL FLOW STRESSES IN WHAT WE ARE CALLING THE "HEAT GENERATION ZONE" (HGZ). IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROPOSED RESEARCH THE FOLLOWING TASKS WILL BE CARRIED OUT: 1. FLAT PINLESS FSW TOOLS WILL BE ROTATED AT DIFFERENT RPM AND REACTIVE LOADS IN AA 2219. TWO DIFFERENT TOOLING MATERIALS WILL BE EMPLOYED IN ORDER TO INTRODUCE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF FRICTION AT THE INTERFACE. THERMOCOUPLES WILL BE EMBEDDED IN THE AL PLATE TO MEASURE TEMPERATURES NEAR THE INTERFACE. THEY WILL ALSO BE EMBEDDED IN THE TOOL. DATA COMING OUT OF THE EXPERIMENT WILL BE TORQUE REACTIVE LOAD AND TEMPERATURES IN THE PLATE AND THE TOOL. 2. A FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OF THE FLAT PINLESS TOOL EXPERIMENT WILL BE DEVELOPED AND COUPLED WITH AN INVERSE PARAMETER ANALYSIS ALGORITHM TO MODEL THE LOCAL FLOW STRESSES IN THE HGZ. 3. THE LOCAL FLOW STRESS RELATIONSHIP FROM TASK #2 WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO AN EULERIAN FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OF FSW DEVELOPED IN PRIOR EFFORTS BY THE PIS. 4. THE FSW MODEL WILL BE VALIDATED BY EXPERIMENTS SUCH THAT TEMPERATURES REACTIVE WELDING LOAD AND WELDING TORQUE ARE ALL PREDICTED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH REASONABLE ACCURACY (5%). INITIAL VALIDATION WILL BE WITH A SMOOTH TOOL. AFTER APPROPRIATE AGREEMENT ON A SMOOTH TOOL A TOOL WITH A THREADED PIN WILL BE EMPLOYED IN THE MODEL AND VALIDATED BY EXPERIMENT. FINALLY A SELF-REACTING FSW TOOL WILL BE MODELED AND VALIDATED BY EXPERIMENT. MODEL RESULTS WILL BE USED TO PREDICT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN THE HEAT AFFECTED ZONE OF THE WELD. THE PROPOSED APPROACH WOULD PROVIDE NASA WITH A METHOD FOR CHARACTERIZING INTERFACE BEHAVIOR FOR A GIVEN ALLOY AND TOOL MATERIAL. THIS INTERFACE BEHAVIOR IS ESSENTIAL TO ACCURATE MODELING. FSW MODELS USING ACCURATE INTERFACE BEHAVIOR WILL BE MORE PREDICTIVE AND USEFUL FOR THE RAPID OPTIMIZATION OF PROCESS PARAMETERS AND TOOL DESIGNS.

GENETIC IMPROVEMENTS IN YIELD, STRESS TOLERANCE, DISEASE RESISTANCE AND POST-HARVEST QUALITY ARE REQUIRED IN EVERY CROP. PLANT BREEDERS HAVE PRODUCED STEADY GAINS IN ALL THESE AREAS OVER THE PAST CENTURY (PROHENS, 2011). HOWEVER, CURRENT RATES OF YIELD INCREASES IN MANY CRITICAL SPECIES SUCH AS WHEAT, RICE, CORN AND SOY REMAIN INSUFFICIENT TO MEET THE FUTURE GLOBAL DEMANDS (RAY ET AL., 2013). INNOVATIONS IN THE PROCESS OF PLANT BREEDING CAN HELP TO FILL THIS GAP.WE BELIEVE THAT INCREASING THE USE OF MULTIPLE-TRAIT BREEDING METHODS CAN BROADLY ACCELERATE CROP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS. MEASURING MULTIPLE TRAITS AT ONCE AND MODELING THEIR RELATIONSHIPS CAN HELP INCREASE THE RATE OF GAIN IN A SINGLE TARGET TRAIT AND IS CRITICAL FOR IMPROVING SUITES OF TRAITS AT ONCE. HOWEVER, THE VAST MAJORITY OF STATISTICAL MODELS USED IN PLANT BREEDING TODAY HANDLE ONLY A SINGLETRAIT (OR AT MOST A FEW TRAITS) AT A TIME. MULTIPLE-TRAIT DATA, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS WIDELY AVAILABLE. HIGH-THROUGHPUT PHENOTYPING TECHNOLOGIES -- SUCH AS HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING AND MOLECULAR PROFILING -- ARE BECOMING ACCESSIBLE TO MANY BREEDING PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE NEW TYPES OF DATA TO INFORM SELECTION DECISIONS. BUT EVEN TRADITIONAL PROGRAMS COLLECT DATA ON MANY TRAITS IN EVERY FIELD, AND WHEN MULTIPLIED ACROSS LOCATIONS OR YEARS (AND CONSIDERING EACH TRAIT IN EACH FIELD AS A DIFFERENT TRAIT), TOTAL TRAIT NUMBERS CAN EASILY REACH INTO THE HUNDREDS. THEREFORE THE DEVELOPMENT OF POWERFUL, EFFICIENT, AND USABLE STATISTICAL TOOLS THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO MANY TRAITS AT ONCE WOULD HAVE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON A WIDE RANGE OF BREEDING PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD.WE INTEND TO INTRODUCE POWERFUL, FREE, AND USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE TO SUPPORT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE BREEDING PROGRAMS IN ANY CROP SPECIES.
