TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE SWELLING PARTICLES FOR ELIMINATION OF COOLED SHORT-CIRCUITS IN A DISCRETE FRACTURE THE TECHNICAL SCOPE OF OUR PROPOSED ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: (1) MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT (TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE SWELLING PARTICLES); (2) LABORATORY DEMONSTRATION OF HYDRAULIC CONTROL; (3) SMALL-SCALE FIELD DEMONSTRATION OF HYDRAULIC CONTROL (AT THE ALTONA FIELD LABORATORY IN NEW YORK STATE); AND (4) COMMERCIAL-SCALE FIELD DEMONSTRATION OF HYDRAULIC CONTROL. MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT WILL EMPLOY POLYACRYLAMIDE NANOPARTICLES THAT UNDERGO A VOLUME PHASE TRANSITION BELOW A TEMPERATURE THRESHOLD. LABORATORY DEMONSTRATION WILL INVOLVE HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER THROUGH A HELE-SHAW CELL THAT EXHIBITS CHANNELED-FLOW BEHAVIOR. THE SMALL-SCALE FIELD DEMONSTRATION WILL DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR HYDRAULIC CONTROL IN A WELL-CHARACTERIZED FIELD LABORATORY THAT IS KNOWN TO EXHIBIT EXTREME SHORT CIRCUITING. FINALLY, THE COMMERCIAL-SCALE DEMONSTRATION WILL EVALUATE OUR HYDRAULIC CONTROL TREATMENT IN AN ACTIVE GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL BE PERFORMED OVER THE COURSE OF THREE 12-MONTH BUDGET PERIODS. THE EXPECTED RESULT OF BUDGET PERIOD 1 WILL BE TO PREPARE AND CHARACTERIZE RECIPE LIST 01. BY THE END OF BUDGET PERIOD 2, WE WILL PERFORM BOTH A LABORATORY-SCALE AND FIELD-SCALE DEMONSTRATION OF HYDRAULIC CONTROL. FINALLY, BUDGET PERIOD 3 WILL CONCLUDE WITH A COMMERCIAL-SCALE FIELD DEMONSTRATION AND FINALIZATION OF TWO RECIPES TO CREATE THE TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE SWELLING PARTICLES.
