**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE MODERN FOOD INDUSTRY HAS BEEN RAPIDLY DEVELOPING WITH A GOAL TO STRIVE SUPPLY MARKETS AND CONSUMERS WITH SAFE, NUTRITIOUS, AND HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTS. HOWEVER, QUALITY ASSURANCE IS CHALLENGING WITH RAISING ISSUE OF LEARNING BIAS IN PROCESSING LARGE AMOUNT OF DATA AND GENERALIZING TO THE EVALUATION OF NEW FOOD TYPE. TRADITIONAL QUALITY ASSURANCE METHODS BASED ON CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTS AND SUBJECTIVE EVALUATIONS ALSO FAIL TO MEET THE REQUIREMENT OF HIGH VOLUME FOOD PRODUCTION AND HIGH FOOD QUALITY CRITERIA. IT IS CRITICAL TO SEARCH FOR MORE ADVANCED, NON-INVASIVE, FAST, RELIABLE, AND AFFORDABLE SENSING TECHNIQUES AND DATA SCIENCE TOOLS THAT WILL ENABLE AUTOMATED AND REAL-TIME DECISION MAKING TO ENSURE FOOD PRODUCT SAFETY.IN THIS PROJECT, WE PROPOSE TO COMBINE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND MILLIMETER WAVE IMAGING TO ENSURE THE ANALYSIS OF MASSIVE FOOD DATA EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE. WE WILL USE ROBUST LEARNING TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE BIAS IN MACHINE LEARNING AND USE FEW-SHOT LEARNING TO DEVELOP A GENERALIZABLE PLATFORM FOR IMAGES FROM NEW FOOD TYPES. THE SYSTEM WILL BE IMPLEMENTED BY INEXPENSIVE IMAGING SYSTEM USING MILLIMETER WAVE CHIPSET. ULTIMATELY, WE EXPECT TO DEVELOP THIS INNOVATIVE NANOTECHNOLOGY THAT WILL MAKE A LONG-RANGE CONTRIBUTION TO DATA SCIENCE AND U.S. AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SYSTEMS.

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** FOODBORNE ILLNESS IMPACTS NEARLY 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES PER YEAR, CAUSING SEVERE ECONOMIC DAMAGES AND HEALTHCARE BURDENS. THERE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR MORE EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO MANAGE PATHOGEN TRANSMISSION ACROSS FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS. THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO DEFINETHE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF EXPANSIVE GENOMIC DIVERSITY OF FOODBORNE PATHOGENS BY INTEGRATING OPEN-SOURCE MOLECULAR DATA WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND MACHINE LEARNING (ML) TECHNOLOGIES, IN ORDER TO INFORM PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS THAT WILL PROMOTE FOOD SAFETY. FOCUSING ON A VARIETY OF PATHOGENS THAT PRESENT UNIQUE RISKS (I.E.,CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI,CRONOBACTER SAKAZAKII, ANDLISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES), WE WILL BUILD AND VALIDATE A COMPUTATIONAL WORKFLOW TO UNDERSTAND HOW SELECTIVE PRESSURES ACROSS FOOD CHAINS DRIVE BACTERIAL ENVIRONMENTALTROPISMS (E.G., GENES UNDERLYING PERSISTENCE, ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE, OR VIRULENCE LINKED TO SPECIFICSOURCE TYPES). LEVERAGING PUBLICLY AVAILABLE GENOMIC AND PHENOTYPIC DATA WILL ENABLE HIGH-THROUGHPUT IDENTIFICATION OF NEW MOLECULAR MARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH FOODBORNE PATHOGEN TRANSMISSION AND EVOLUTION. THESE DATA WILL FURTHER SERVE AS KEY REFERENCE MATERIAL TO IMPROVE STRATEGIES FOR PATHOGEN MOLECULAR SURVEILLANCE WITH METAGENOMICS. OVERALL, THE ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK THAT WEDEVELOP AND PROMOTE FOR USE BY THE FOOD SAFETY RESEARCH COMMUNITY WILL HAVE APPLICATIONS THAT EXTEND TO BROADER FOODBORNE PATHOGEN GROUPS AND EMERGING FOOD SAFETY CONCERNS.

**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** RATIONALE: ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2022, HURRICANE IAN MADE LANDFALL IN SOUTHWESTERN FLORIDA AS A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE; HOWEVER, THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE IMPACTS ARE STILL UNKNOWN. OUR OVERALL GOAL IS TO DEVELOP AND OFFER AN OPEN-SOURCE WEB-BASED MAPPING PLATFORM THAT PROVIDES A TEMPORAL SEQUENCE OF HURRICANE DISTURBANCE SEVERITY AND RECOVERY MAPS ACROSS FORESTED AREAS WITHIN HURRICANE IAN'S PATH IN FLORIDA. APPROACH: WE WILL LEVERAGE NASA'S GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM DYNAMICS INVESTIGATOR (GEDI) AND LANDSAT 9 OLI-2 DATA ALONG WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ALGORITHMS, TO MAP FOREST ABOVEGROUND BIOMASS (AGB) AT A 30 M SPATIAL RESOLUTION ACROSS HURRICANE IAN'S PATH AT TWO MONTHS PRE- AND AT TWO, SIX- AND TWELVE-MONTHS POST-HURRICANE IAN DISTURBANCE. WE WILL USE THESE MAPS TO PRODUCE A TEMPORAL SEQUENCE OF HURRICANE DAMAGE SEVERITY ESTIMATES. MAPS WILL BE INPUT INTO AN OPEN-SOURCE WEB-BASED, USER-FRIENDLY MAPPING PLATFORM USING GEE TO BROADEN ITS ACCESSIBILITY AND APPLICATIONS. WE WILL CREATE A TRAINING WEBINAR SUPPORTING OUR PLATFORM THAT WILL BE DISTRIBUTED USING THE UF'S EXTENSION NETWORK AND TAUGHT THROUGH UF'S 4-H FOREST ECOLOGY PROGRAM. POTENTIAL IMPACT AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A USER-FRIENDLY MAPPING PLATFORM FOR MANAGEMENT AGENCIES AND THE PUBLIC TO ASSESS THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND SEVERITY OF HURRICANE DAMAGE AND SHORT-TERM RECOVERY PATTERNS OF FORESTS TO SUPPORT RAPID FOREST MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF RECEIVING THE AWARD, WE WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE MAPS OF PRE-AND POST-HURRICANE FOREST AGB AND CHANGES IN AGB THAT CAN BE USED FOR EARLY ASSESSMENT OF HURRICANE IMPACTS, HELPING THE SPATIAL PRIORITIZATION OF POST-HURRICANE MANAGEMENT.
