** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE IN THE MIDWEST U.S. IS DOMINATED BY 2-CROP ROTATIONS, PRIMARILY CORN AND SOYBEANS. THE COMBINATION OF CHANGING CLIMATE PATTERNS AND DEPENDENCE ON A SIMPLETWO-CROP ROTATIONAL SCHEME IS CONCERNING BECAUSE THESE 2-CROP ROTATIONS MAY LACK RESILIENCE TO CHANGING WEATHER PATTERNS (GAUDIN ET AL. 2013; 2015). THE SOLUTION REQUIRES A TACTICAL APPROACH THAT STRIVES TO BUILD GREATER CROP RESILIENCE TO CLIMATE-RELATED STRESS (OVER A SHORT TIMEFRAME, I.E. DAYS TO WEEKS) AND BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW GREATER CROP RESILIENCE CAN SUBSEQUENTLY INCREASE CROP STABILITY (OVER A LONG TIMEFRAME, I.E. YEARS). FURTHERMORE, WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PREDICT HOW THESE RELATIONSHIPS WILL EVOLVE OVER TIME (I.E. DECADES) GIVEN CLIMATE CHANGE. HOWEVER,POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF MORE-DIVERSE CROPPING SYSTEMS WILL DEPEND ON WHETHER THEY ARE PROFITABLE ENOUGH TO BE WIDELY ADOPTED.THIS PROPOSAL WILL EMPLOY THE ABOVE STRATEGY BY:COMPARING RESILIENCE (RECOVERY AND RESISTANCE) OF CORN TO SOIL WATER DEFICITSOR EXCESSES AMONG FIVE CROPPING SYSTEMS (DIFFERING IN ROTATIONAL DIVERSITY) ACROSS THREE YEARS AND THREE LOCATIONS (9 NEW SITE-YEARS).PROJECTING YIELD VARIATION IN THESE FIVE SYSTEMS OVER YEARS UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATE-CHANGE SCENARIOS, USING CROP MODELING AND OUR EXPERIMENTAL DATA FOR 18 TOTAL SITE-YEARS.PREDICTING THE EXTENT TO WHICH ADOPTION OF POTENTIALLY MORE-RESILIENT SYSTEMS MAY BE CONSTRAINED BY ECONOMICS, INCLUDING LIMITED DEMAND FOR MINOR CROPS.WE WILL USE SHORT-RANGE OPTICAL SENSING OF THE PLANT CANOPY TO MEASURE RESISTANCE AND RECOVERY FROM EXPERIMENTAL PLOTS WITH DIFFERENT SOIL WATER DEFICIT OR EXCESS REGIMES. WE WILL FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON THE CORN PHASE OF FIVE DIFFERENT CROPPING SYSTEMS, WHICH ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF A WIDER CLASS OF OPTIONS. MODEL-BASED SIMULATIONS WILL BE LEVERAGED TO EXPLORE MECHANISTIC LINKS BETWEEN CROP AND YIELD RESPONSES IN THE CONTEXT OF EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND PLAUSIBLE FUTURE CLIMATE SCENARIOS ACROSS THE REGION. ECONOMIC ANALYSIS WILL BE CONDUCTED TO ASSESS THE CURRENT PROFITABILITY OF THE FIVE DIVERSIFIED CROPPING SYSTEMS AND HOW PROFITABILITY MAY CHANGE IF A SYSTEM IS WIDELY ADOPTED. THIS PROPOSED STUDY WILL BE CONDUCTED AT THREE LOCATIONS IN MINNESOTA WITH CONTRASTING SOIL AND WEATHER CONDITIONS. OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH IS POSITIONED TO DETERMINE THE PERFORMANCE OF CROPS FROM DIVERSIFIED ROTATION PRACTICES UNDER VARIABLE CONDITIONS OF SOIL, WEATHER (I.E., PRECIPITATION), AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. THIS WILL ALLOW US TO ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECT OF DIVERSIFICATION ON CORN RESILIENCE AND YIELD STABILITY.

THE LABOR FORCE IN THE FOOD SYSTEM, FROM FARMS TO SUPERMARKETS AND ALL THE INTERCONNECTED SEGMENTS IN BETWEEN, WAS A HIGHLY PUBLICIZED CONSTRAINT IN GETTING FOOD FROM THE GROUND AND ONTO PLATES. NEWS STORIES IN THE POPULAR PRESS AND TRADE PUBLICATIONS REGULARLY DISCUSSED THE ONGOING LABOR ISSUES THROUGHOUT THE FOOD SYSTEM, COVERING FACTORS SUCH AS HIGH RATES OF TURNOVER (FARM BUREAU, 2022), SHUTDOWNS DUE TO COVID-19 INFECTIONS (AP NEWS, 2021), WAGE INFLATION (AGAMERICA, 2022), THE LOSS OF INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE (TSI, 2020; US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, 2023), AND THE DIFFICULTIES IN ATTRACTING YOUNG WORKERS (CROPTRACKER, 2022). A GOOGLE TRENDS ANALYSIS FOR THE TERM LABOR SHORTAGE READILY REVEALS THAT, EVEN AMONG THE PUBLIC, CONCERN AND AWARENESS FOR THIS ISSUE HAS INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY SINCE 2020.DESPITE THE ESTABLISHED IMPORTANCE AND URGENCY OF THIS ISSUE BY INDUSTRY, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND INCREASINGLY THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY, THERE IS LITTLE PUBLISHED QUANTITATIVE WORK ADDRESSING THE ISSUE. AVAILABLE ESTIMATES OF LABOR SHORTAGES, TURNOVER RATES, WAGE VARIATION, AND OTHER METRICS ARE PREDOMINANTLY ANECDOTAL, WHICH HAMPERS INVESTIGATING HOW THESE MEASURES HAVE CHANGED IN RECENT YEARS. UNDERSTANDING THESE MEASURES IN THE CONTEXT OF A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE LABOR FORCE CAN HELP THE FOOD SYSTEM FULLY REALIZE THE QUANTIFIABLE BENEFITS OF A DIVERSE WORKFORCE (ROBERSON, 2019). ADDITIONALLY, THE US FOOD INDUSTRY, FROM FARMS (MACDONALD 2020) TO SUPERMARKETS (ZEBALLOS ET AL., 2023, HENDRICKSON ET AL. 2021) AND MOST SECTORS IN BETWEEN (MACDONALD ET AL., 2023), HAS BEEN DEFINED BY INCREASED CONSOLIDATION IN RECENT DECADES. HOWEVER, DESPITE THE KNOWN IMPACTS OF CONSOLIDATION IN OTHER RETAIL INDUSTRIES ON THE LABOR FORCE (RABBANI AND RAJ, 2023, GUANZIROLI 2022), THE LABOR FORCE IMPACTS OF CONSOLIDATION IN THE FOOD SYSTEM ARE NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD AND MAY BE VITAL TO UNDERSTANDING ONGOING LABOR ISSUES. THIS GAP IN KNOWLEDGE IS PARTICULARLY APPARENT WHEN CONSIDERING HOW THE IMPACTS TRANSCEND AN INDIVIDUAL SEGMENT OF THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN. MEDIUM- AND LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN PROPOSED TO ADDRESS LABOR ISSUES IN THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN (LUCKSTEAD ET AL. 2021, LARUE 2020), BUT WE ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY WORK THAT HAS ASSESSED THE POTENTIAL COSTS OR BENEFITS OF THESE SOLUTIONS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT ADDRESSES EACH OF THESE KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION GAPS THROUGH FOUR RELATED, BUT INDIVIDUAL OBJECTIVES. INVESTIGATING THESE OBJECTIVES WILL DEVELOP INSIGHTS FOR INDUSTRIAL, POLICY, AND ACADEMIC AUDIENCES.

DUE TO CONSIDERABLE RESEARCH EFFORTS KEY MECHANISMS ORGANISMS AND INTERACTIONS INVOLVED IN THE BIOLOGICAL PUMP HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BUT THE MAGNITUDE AND DYNAMICS OF THIS GLOBALLY IMPORTANT PROCESS ARE STILL POORLY QUANTIFIED AND CONSTRAINED (BOYD AND TRULL 2007 HENSON ET AL. 2011 SIEGEL ET AL. 2014). OUR INABILITY TO ACCURATELY QUANTIFY THE BIOLOGICAL PUMP IS DUE IN PART TO MISSING LINKS BETWEEN COMPLEX ECOLOGICAL PROCESSES AND THE RESULTING MAGNITUDE AND EFFICIENCY OF C EXPORT THROUGH THE UPPER 500 M OF THE OCEAN WHERE MOST OF THE C FLUX ATTENUATION OCCURS (STUKEL ET AL. 2012 SIEGEL ET AL. 2014). THE FUTURE CAPABILITIES IN OCEAN COLOR REMOTE SENSING WILL ALLOW FINER DISCRIMINATION OF THE SURFACE PHYTOPLANKTON COMMUNITY ENABLING MODELS TO ACCURATELY INCORPORATE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PHYTOPLANKTON FUNCTIONAL TYPES AND MAJOR BIOLOGICAL CARBON EXPORT PATHWAYS. FOR ADVANCED SATELLITES TO IMPROVE QUANTIFICATION OF THE BIOLOGICAL PUMP PREDICTABLE LINKS BETWEEN ORGANISMS EXPORT MECHANISMS AND THE MAGNITUDE AND EFFICIENCY OF C EXPORT MUST BE RESOLVED AND CONSTRAINED. WE PROPOSE TO DEPLOY NEUTRALLY-BUOYANT SEDIMENT TRAPS (NBSTS) AND A SURFACE TETHERED SEDIMENT TRAP ARRAY (STT) CENTERED AROUND A CONTINUOUSLY PROFILING BIO-OPTICAL SENSOR PLATFORM IN THE UPPER 500 M OF THE OCEAN DURING THE EXPORTS NORTH ATLANTIC FIELD CAMPAIGN. THESE OBSERVATIONS WILL EXPLICITLY LINK UPPER OCEAN PLANKTON WITH VERTICAL TRANSPORT MECHANISMS AND THE RESULTING MAGNITUDE AND EFFICIENCY OF C EXPORT AND THEREFORE WILL DIRECTLY ADDRESS EXPORTS SCIENCE QUESTIONS 1 AND 2. THIS WORK IS GUIDED BY AN OVERARCHING HYPOTHESIS THAT THE MAGNITUDE AND EFFICIENCY OF C EXPORT IN THE UPPER OCEAN IS DETERMINED BOTH BY THE IDENTITY OF SINKING ORGANISMS AND THE MECHANISM OF THEIR TRANSPORT. GENERALLY, AS ANIMALS INCREASE ENERGY CONSUMPTION FEED EFFICIENCY IS IMPROVED; HOWEVER, PREVIOUS RESEARCH INDICATES THAT MAXIMUM FEED INTAKE DOES NOT EQUAL MAXIMUM FEED EFFICIENCY (GILL ET AL., 1986). ADDITIONALLY, PRECISION FEEDING FOR DIFFERENT STRATEGIES HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO REDUCE NUTRIENT LOSS, BOTH IN MINIMIZING MANURE OUTPUT AND REDUCTIONS IN VOLATILE NITROGEN EXCRETION (DRIEDGER AND LOERCH, 1999). THIS STRATEGY IS WELL DESIGNED FOR SMALL- AND MEDIUM-SIZED FEEDLOT PRODUCERS AS THEY TYPICALLY HAVE SMALLER PEN SIZES, WHICH CAN HELP LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF WITHIN PEN VARIABILITY THAT IS OBSERVED IN LARGER FEEDLOT OPERATIONS. THIS IS ALIGNED WITH THE PRIORITY AREAS K, L, AND N FROM THE SMALL- AND MEDIUM SIZED FARM PROGRAM RFA. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO EXAMINE INCREASING FEEDING LEVELS USING COMMON FEEDLOT RATIONS FOR SOUTH DAKOTA AND KANSAS TO DETERMINE:ANIMAL PERFORMANCE AND FEED EFFICIENCYENTERIC METHANE PRODUCTION AND NUTRIENT EXCRETIONEXAMINE HOW PRECISION FEEDING IMPACTS THE ECONOMIC RETURNS TO PRODUCERSTHE KEY OUTCOME OF THIS PROPOSAL IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIFIC DIETARY STRATEGIES USING FEED INGREDIENTS COMMON TO EACH REGION FOR SMALL- AND MEDIUM-SIZED PRODUCERS THAT IMPROVE THEIR ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND POSITIONS THEM TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FUTURE CARBON CREDIT PROGRAMS THROUGH AN EASY AND PRODUCER FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT STRATEGY.
