THE LAND RESOURCE AND FARMERS WHO USE AND SUSTAIN IT REPRESENT THE FOUNDATION OF OUR NATION THROUGH PRODUCTION OF FOOD, FIBER, AND OTHER PRODUCTS. HOWEVER, FARMERS FACE CHALLENGES AND REQUIRE EDUCATION AND TRAINING TO INCORPORATE THE LATEST SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION INTO THEIR DAILY OPERATIONS. CURRENTLY, ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANT BACTERIA HAS BECOME A MAJOR CHALLENGE AND A CONCERN TO THE PUBLIC HEALTH. ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANCE IS NOT ONLY A THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH, BUT HAS ALSO BECOME AN IMPORTANT FOOD SAFETY ISSUE AFFECTING THE CAPITAL GAINS OF LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY FARMS. CURRENTLY, THERE IS A TREND OF MEAT PROCESSING FACILITIES AND COMPANIES GOING ANTIBIOTICS-FREE MEAT AS MORE CONSUMERS DEMAND IT. CONSEQUENTLY THE PROMPT DEMAND FOR ORGANIC MEATS AND OTHER ANIMAL PRODUCTS HAVE, HOWEVER, BROUGHT CHALLENGES TO SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS WHICH ARE STRUGGLING TO MEET THE DEMAND. THESE FARMS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE WITH LOW INCOME AND LIMITED ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THEREFORE, THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO EDUCATE SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CATTLE AND POULTRY PRODUCERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE FACTORS ON FARMS AND MAXIMIZE THEIR PROFITS IN THEIR PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. IN THIS PROJECT, ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANT BACTERIA AND RESISTANCE PATTERNS ON POULTRY AND CATTLE FARMS WILL BE ESTABLISHED, THIS DATA WILL BE USED FOR EDUCATING THE FARMERS. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO INVOLVE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS COMPONENT AND ALSO PROVIDE NECESSARY TRAINING FOR CATTLE AND POULTRY FARMERS ON ECONOMIC BENEFITS FOR ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE PROGRAMS. THIS ANALYSIS PROVIDES A FULL RANGE OF NET RETURNS TO DETERMINE THE ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF ANTIMICROBIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR SMALLHOLDER CATTLE AND POULTRY.RESEARCH DATA ON ANIMAL PRODUCTION PRACTICES, AND ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE FACTORS, AND CAPITAL GAINS AND LOSSES WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO POULTRY AND CATTLE FARMERS, EXTENSION AGENTS, VETERINARIANS, AND STUDENTS THROUGH WORSHIPS ON BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMPS), ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP, AND RISK COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS. THE PROJECT'S TEAM WILL ALSO USE A MOBILE AGRICULTURE PROGRAM TO DELIVER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND MEET CLIENTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE HAS A MOBILE AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION TRAILER READY TO RESPOND AND MEET CLIENTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES WHERE FARMING CHALLENGES EXIST. AT THE COMPLETION OF THIS PROJECT, RATIONAL ECONOMIC DECISION- CATTLE AND POULTRY PRODUCERS WILL MAKE PRODUCTION DECISIONS BY CHOOSING PRODUCTION METHODS THAT MAXIMIZES THEIR PROFITS UNDER RISK AND UNCERTAINTY. THE FARMERS WILL HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE ON NEW STRATEGIES TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND INCOME, IMPROVED MARKETING STRATEGIES, AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS. KNOWLEDGEABLE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY IS CITED AS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN REDUCING ANTIBIOTIC USE AND CAPITALIZING FARMER'S PROFITS. ESTABLISHED ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP AND BMP PROGRAMS WILL RESULT TO HEALTHY ANIMALS AND CAPITALS GAINS FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CATTLE AND POULTRY FARMS.
