Abstract

This core provides services to all of the projects. It provides for Dr. Reids' time for overall Program Project management, consultations with the projects and data handling, as well as for assisting with the core. Dr. Shankar will be the on-site director of the Core, responsible for all of the local matters that arise. The core personnel are responsible for assuring proper operation of the clinical digitizer and data transfer from the Clinical Core (A) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to investigators at Drexel and at the University of Kentucky. Core B personnel are also responsible for assisting all projects in receiving and translating data into their formats. They purchase or construct special tissue-mimicking phantoms as needed in any project. The core contains a computer-controlled scanner for making B mode images of phantoms and of animal tissues to be obtained from the Drexel University animal facility. Initial tests of new single-element transducers from project 7 will be made by this facility. The core is located in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems of Drexel University, and is convenient to all of the Drexel investigators. The optical discs from the Clinical Core are brought to the laboratory by subway from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, which ia a 15 minute ride away. Once checked, these data are made available to all investigators (including Dr. Donohue at Kentucky) through the Drexel ethernet. Core facilities are assigned by the Principal Investigator. The advice of a panel of the Project Leaders will be sought to resolve conflicts. The success of the tissue characterization methods will be evaluated by ROC analysis using results of pathology. Additional development of ROC methods will be undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of our ultrasonic methods in diagnosis.
