Abstract

The purpose of this study is to validate bioelectric spectroscopy, a form of bioelectrical impedance analysis, as a method for measuring fluid shifts in simulated weightlessness. Predictive equations will be constructed by correlating this method against body dilution of deuterium oxide (measurement of total body water) and sodium bromide (measurement of extracellular fluid). In addition, this study will calibrate proximally placed electrodes (elbow and knee) to improve measurement precision. If this method is successful, it may be used to measure fluid status during space flight.
