Abstract

Recent studies have shown that adult SCD patients in vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) have low serum nitrate levels which are the stable end-product of nitric oxide (NO). Improvements in patient scales for patients in VOC parallel increases in NO production. The specific aims are to determine baseline levels of L-Arg and NO in SCD in children at baseline and in crisis; to determine if there are any differences in levels of L-Arg and NO at these times and to follow these levels daily. By following these levels daily we are hoping to determine if these levels are predictive of clinical outcome.
