Abstract
In this study we propose to evaluate a total of 400 patients with major depression and 250 patients with borderline personality disorder. Half of each group will have a life-time history of a suicide attempt and half will not have such a history. In addition 100 healthy controls will be studied. All patients and controls will have a comprehensive series of clinical and biological measures at index hospitalization or study baseline. Data gathered will include any suicide attempts, current suicidal ideation, the presence or absence of a major depressive episode, social stressors, details of medication treatment and psychotherapy, medical illnesses, and a review of the diagnosis since the last evaluation. The goal of the study is to assess biological and clinical predictors of future suicide attempts.
