Abstract

Our hypotheses are that a simple nonradioactive breath test can identify GERD patients who have delayed gastric emptying; gastric emptying is similar in a referral group of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease as compared to those community based who self report GERD symptoms; and delayed gastric emptying in GERD is more associated with dyspeptic symptoms than the severity of frequency of GERD symptoms. The specific aims of the study are to validate the breath test method with scintigraphy in patients with delayed gastric emptying; to compare gastric emptying obtained from patients with GERD with the data obtained in healthy subjects; to compare the gastric emptying rates between patients seen in a referral population with GERD with a community based sample of subjects with GERD symptoms; and to correlate the degree of delayed gastric emptying with the severity and frequency of GERD and dyspeptic symptoms and the presence of complications of GERD if any.
