Abstract

The objective of the current study is to screen patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes mellitus for abnormalities of the CDK4 gene (a cell cycle gene). It is well established that genetic predisposition plays a major role in the pathogenesis of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Extensive studies by many laboratories over the past 15 years have identified several gene mutations which together, however, can account for less than 5% of diabetes. Hence the genetic defects in over 95% of the diabetic patients remain unknown.
