Abstract

Dr. Ptacek and his collaborators have utilized the General Clinical Research Center to perform phenotyping studies as part of gene localization-cloning projects for a number of neurologic disorders. These have included spinocerebellar ataxia, periodic paralysis, cerebral cavernous angiomata, and a number of motion disorders. Over the past year, Dr. Ptacek's emphasis has been on the advanced sleep phase syndrome. Dr. Ptacek's research has resulted in the identification of a number of genes that cause neurologic diseases, many of which have proven to be genes that encode proteins that affect the electrical charge on nerve cell membranes.
