THE FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEM AND THE US ECONOMY RELIES HEAVILY ON AGRICULTURAL WORKERS, THE MAJORITY OF WHOM ARE IMMIGRANTS THAT HAVE ADDITIONAL HEALTH CHALLENGES WHEN COMPARED TO NON-IMMIGRANTS. INFECTIOUS DISEASES SUCH AS COVID AND THOSE SPREAD BY INSECT VECTORS LIKE MOSQUITOES POSE A THREAT TO FARMWORKER HEALTH, FOOD PRODUCTION, AND THE ECONOMY. WITH USDA GOALS TO MOVE TOWARDS MORE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES, THE HEALTH OF FARMWORKERS NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED TO MAKE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES TRULY SUSTAINABLE. SINCE MOSQUITOES AND THE PATHOGENS THEY TRANSMIT RESPOND TO LANDSCAPE FACTORS INCLUDING AGRICULTURAL VARIABLES, AN UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR DYNAMICS IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURING THE HEALTH OF FARMWORKERS AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION.WITH THIS RESEARCH, WE AIM TO INVESTIGATE HOW AGRICULTURAL INTENSIFICATION AFFECTS MOSQUITO ABUNDANCE, VIRAL INFECTION RATES, AND FARMWORKERS EXPOSURE TO BITES. WE WILL USE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATA TO ASSESS AGRICULTURAL INTENSIFICATION ACROSSTHE CENTRAL VALLEY OF CALIFORNIA. WE WILL THEN INPUT THIS DATA INTO STATISTICAL MODELS TO BE ABLE TO PREDICT WHAT FACTORS LEAD TO HIGHER MOSQUITO ABUNDANCE, HIGHER RATES OF VIRAL INFECTION IN MOSQUITOES, AND HIGHER RISK OF MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE TO FARMWORKERS. ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL TAKE BLOOD SAMPLES FROM FARMWORKERS TO MEASURE THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH THEY ARE EXPOSED TO MOSQUITO BITES AND HOW THAT EXPOSURE IS RELATED TO BOTH THEIR AGRICULTURAL WORK ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT AND BEHAVIOR TOWARDS MOSQUITOES. THIS KNOWLEDGE WILL ALLOW US TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FARMERS AND FARMWORKERS, FOR EXAMPLE WHAT TIME OF DAY TO HARVEST WHICH CROPS TO AVOID MOSQUITO EXPOSURE, AND TO CREATE MATERIAL FOR FARMWORKERS TO LEARN ABOUT MOSQUITO AND MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE. THE GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO IMPROVE THE WELL-BEING AND HEALTH OF FARMWORKERS, A VULNERABLE POPULATION, BY BETTER UNDERSTANDING THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH MOSQUITOES AND HOW TO MITIGATE THE RISKMOSQUITOES POSE.
