BEING PRIMARILY A SOUTHERN AND SOUTHEASTERN CROP, COTTON FARMING INVOLVES UNIQUE AGRONOMIC PRACTICES, ONE OF WHICH IS THE APPLICATION OF POULTRY LITTER (PL, A MIXTURE OF FECES, SPILLED FEED, FEATHERS, AND BEDDING MATERIALS) AS A NUTRIENT SUPPLEMENT IN THE BEGINNING OF CROP SEASON. THE SECOND ONE IS COVER CROP (CC) CULTIVATION DURING WINTER/SPRING FALLOW, WHICH HAS GAINED SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION LATELY OWING TO ITS BENEFICIAL IMPACTS ON SOIL HEALTH, WATER QUALITY, AND SOIL EROSION, ALONG WITH EARLY-SEASON WEED SUPPRESSION. REGARDING PL, THERE IS ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE THAT PL MAY STIMULATE SEED GERMINATION BY ENHANCING SOIL FERTILITY WITH THE RAPID FLOW OF ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS, SUCH AS NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, AND POTASSIUM. MOREOVER, THE PI'S TEAM HAS OBSERVED INCREASED WEED EMERGENCE AND GROWTH IN PL-APPLIED RESEARCH PLOTS THAT SUBSEQUENTLY LOWERED CROP YIELD. REGARDING CC, A THICK STAND OF CC CAN HELP SUPPRESS WEEDS, BUT IT CAN ALSO INTERCEPT RESIDUAL HERBICIDES SPRAYED IN THE SPRING FOR EARLY-SEASON WEED SUPPRESSION. MORE IMPORTANTLY, INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE CC BIOMASS AND PREEMERGENCE AND EARLY-POSTEMERGENCE HERBICIDES ARE REPORTED TO CONTROL WEED CONTROL SUCCESS. THIS STUDY AIMS TO UNDERSTAND AND MITIGATE THE WEED CONTROL CONCERNS OF THESE TWO IMPORTANT AGRONOMIC MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, WHICH ARE VERY CRITICAL TO THE SOUTHEASTERN US, INCLUDING ALABAMA. THIS PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP A NOVEL DATASET ON INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT AND BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE COTTON WEED MANAGEMENT BY ADJUSTING THE TIMING OF PL APPLICATION AND CC TERMINATION, HERBICIDE FORMULATIONS/ADJUVANTS, AND IRRIGATION/RAINFALL CUSTOMIZED TO THE REGIONAL COTTON GROWERS.
