PER- AND POLYFLUORINATED ALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS) HAVE CONTAMINATED WATER SYSTEMS IN 50 STATES, WITH AN ESTIMATED 200 MILLION U.S. RESIDENTS RECEIVING PFAS-CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER. PFAS ARE ALSO COMMONLY FOUND IN FOOD PACKAGING, SUCH AS FAST-FOOD PACKAGING AND DISPOSABLE PAPER PLATES.AMONG PFAS, 6:2 FLUOROTELOMER ALCOHOL (6:2 FTOH) IS THE MOST DOMINANT, ANDIT EASILY MIGRATES INTO FATTY FOODS. HOWEVER, KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HOW THE EXPOSUREOF 6:2 FTOH COULD INFLUENCE HUMAN GUT HEALTH IS VERY LIMITED. THEREFORE, THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF 6:2 FTOH ON THE GUT MICROBIOME-METABOLOME AND ITS ROLE IN COLONIC INFLAMMATION. ADDITIONALLY, APREVENTION STRATEGY BASED ON KALE CONSUMPTION WILL BE EVALUATED. TO OBTAIN THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT,THE EFFECTS OF 6:2 FTOH ON THE GUT MICROBIOTA, GUT PERMEABILITY, COLON LENGTH, AND THE LEVELS OF INFLAMMATORY MARKERS,IN MALE AND FEMALE MICE, WILL BE DETERMINED. ALSO, THE EFFECT OFKALE CONSUMPTION ON MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF 6:2 FTOHWILL BE EVALUATED. THE RESULT OF THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE NEW EVIDENCE ON THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF PFAS EXPOSURE.
