** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THIS IS AN INTEGRATED PROJECT SUBMITTED BY OUR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH TEAM CONSISTING OFPRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS FROM THREE COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONS IN TWO STATES (ARKANSAS AND KANSAS).OUR PROJECT ADDRESSES THE PRIMARY GOAL AND OBJECTIVE OF THE METHYL BROMIDE TRANSITION PROGRAMBY RESEARCHING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PRACTICAL INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM) SYSTEMS TOPROTECT POST-HARVEST BAGGED COMMODITIES DURING TRANSPORTATION IN SHIPPING CONTAINERS. WE AREPROPOSING TO OPTIMIZE FUMIGANT APPLICATION METHODS FOR PHOSPHINEBASED ONEXPERIMENTS IN SHIPPING CONTAINERS AND BY DEVELOPING AND VALIDATING A COMPUTATIONAL FLUIDDYNAMICS MODEL OF PHOSPHINE DISTRIBUTION INSIDE THE CONTAINERS. AT THE SAME TIME, WE WILLEVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRE-LOADING APPLICATIONS OF CONTACT INSECTICIDES IN SHIPPINGCONTAINERS AND INSECTICIDE-INCORPORATED PACKAGING AT SUPPRESSING INSECT POPULATIONS ANDPROTECTING COMMODITIES. A COMPREHENSIVE COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS FOR EACH OF THESE IPMTECHNOLOGIES ALONE AND IN COMBINATION WILL BE CONDUCTED. THE FINAL AIM IS TO TRANSFER THISINFORMATION ON BEST PRACTICES TO UNITED STATES AND INTERNATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDING FOOD ANDFEED INDUSTRIES AND HUMANITARIAN AID AGENCIES TO BETTER IMPLEMENT IPM PRACTICES. WITHIN THESEBROAD OBJECTIVES, WE WILL SHOW HOW COMBINING IPM TOOLS COULD REDUCE INFESTATION FROM STOREDPRODUCT INSECTS ECONOMICALLY COMPARED TO FUMIGATION ALONE.
