** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMPLEX (BRDC) CAUSES MORE THAN $2 BILLION IN ANNUAL LOSS TO THE CATTLE INDUSTRY, WHICH HAS CHALLENGED THE CATTLE INDUSTRIES FOR DECADES. FOR CATTLE PRODUCERS TO BETTER CONTROL AND MANAGE THE DISEASE, A POINT-OF-CARE DIAGNOSTIC METHOD WITH LOW COST, QUICKLY DELIVERED RESULT AND ACCURATE DETECTION OF BRDC IS HIGHLY DESIRABLE. WE PROPOSE A RAPID DIAGNOSTIC STRATEGY BASED ON SURFACE-ENHANCED RAMAN SCATTERINGAND DEEP-LEARNING ALGORITHMS. THE SURFACE-ENHANCED RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY IS A NANOTECHNOLOGY BASED HIGHLY SENSITIVE DETECTION METHOD THAT CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SPECTRA COLLECTED FROM DIFFERENT VIRUSES AND BACTERIA, WHILE THE DEEP-LEARNING ALGORITHMS CAN HELP US BETTER DIFFERENTIATE VIRAL AND BACTERIAL SIGNALS IN THE SPECTRA FROM A COMPLEX NASAL MICROBIAL COMMUNITY SPECIMEN SUCH AS DEEP NASAL SWABS. IN THIS PROJECT, THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL TARGET THREE SPECIFIC AIMS, I.E., TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMAL DETECTION STRATEGIES FOR ALL BRDC RELATED VIRUSES, THE MULTI-VIRAL INFECTIONS, AND THE BRDC VIRUS-BACTERIA CO-INFECTIONS. EVENTUALLY A HANDHELD, HIGHLY SENSITIVE AND ACCURATE BRDC DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM WILL BE DEVELOPED. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE PROPOSED DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM WILL BE COST-EFFECTIVE (LESS THAN $5 PER TEST), RAPID (SAMPLE-TO-ANSWER TIME LESS THAN 20 MINUTES), ACCURATE (LESS THAN 1% FAILURE RATE), CAN DETECT ALL THE MAJOR VIRAL PATHOGENS ASSOCIATED WITH BRDC, AND IS READY TO BE OPERATED BY CATTLE PRODUCERS ON-SITE. WITH THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROPOSAL, THE CATTLE PRODUCERS, ESPECIALLY IN RURAL AREAS, WILL HAVE EASY ACCESS TO A LOW COST, NOVEL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM THAT WILL AID IN EARLY AND ACCURATE DISEASE DETECTION AND MANAGEMENT, THUS MINIMIZING THE LOSSES DUE TO BRDC INFECTION.
