** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** PIGS ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FARM ANIMALS IN THE U.S., BUT MANY VIRUSES, SUCH AS PORCINE EPIDEMIC DIARRHEA VIRUS (PEDV), AND THE RE-EMERGING AFRICAN SWINE FEVER VIRUS (ASFV), THREAT THEIR PRODUCTION. EARLY DETECTION IS STILL ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MITIGATE THE LOSS OF A VIRAL OUTBREAK. USING PORCINE EPIDEMIC DIARRHEA VIRUS (PEDV) AS A MODEL VIRUS, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A NANOSENSOR THAT COULD BE USED DIRECTLY IN PIG FARMS BY UNTRAINED PERSONNE TO QUICKLY DETECT THE VIRUS. THIS NANOSENSOR WILL BE SENSITIVE, SPECIFIC, AND ROBUST, AND CAN PRODUCE A COLORIMETRIC SIGNAL OBSERVABLE BY NAKED EYES. NO EQUIPMENT WILL BE NEEDED FOR QUICK QUALITATIVE DETECTION. IF SUCCESSFUL, THIS TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED TO DEVELOP NANOSENSORS TO DETECT OTHER IMPORTANT ANIMAL VIRUSES, SUCH AS ASFV, TO BOLSTER THE BIOSECURITY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION.
