** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE PROJECT AIMS TO QUANTIFYTHE STRUCTURE OF THE US CONSUMER DEMAND FOR TABLE SUGARS, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS; ESTIMATING THE DEGREE OF SWEETENERADDICTION; EXAMINING SEPARABLE SWEETENER STRUCTURES TO REVEAL POTENTIAL SUBSTITUTABILITY TOWARD NON-CALORIC ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS; AND EXAMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POLICY INTERVENTION IN ACHIEVING DESIRED BODYWEIGHT OUTCOMES WHILE CURBING ADVERSE CONSUMER WELFARE CONSEQUENCES. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE TO:(A) PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR A BROAD SPECTRUM OF 20 WIDELY CONSUMED SWEETENERS SUCH AS TABLE SUGARS, NATURAL SWEETENERS, ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, AND SYRUPS.(B) SHED LIGHT ON SWEETENER ADDICTION BY DECOMPOSING SWEETENER CONSUMPTION INTO PRE-COMMITTED AND DISCRETIONARY QUANTITIES.(C) PROBE A SERIES OF POSSIBLE SEPARABLE PREFERENCE STRUCTURES VIA WEAK SEPARABILITY TESTS.(D) PERFORM COUNTERFACTUAL ANALYSES TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SWEETENER TAX POLICIES.(E) FORMULATE POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING PUBLIC POLICIES THAT WILL BOOST HEALTH BENEFITS AND MINIMIZE ADVERSE WELFARE CONSEQUENCES.ADDRESSING THESE OBJECTIVES AND COMBINING RECENT ADVANCES IN CONSUMER THEORY AND ECONOMETRIC TECHNIQUES WITH UNIQUELY DISAGGREGATED DATA HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATEIMPROVED KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN SERVE AS AN INFORMATIONAL BASE FOR POLICY.THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THE FOLLOWING PRIORITY SCOPES: (I) ECONOMIC AND BEHAVIORAL ASPECTS OF CONSUMPTION OR SAVINGS BEHAVIOR, CONSUMER FINANCIAL DECISION MAKING; AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION, AND THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF POLICY INTENDED TO AFFECT THOSE BEHAVIORS; (II) EXAMINE THE ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF BIG DATA ON AGRICULTURAL MARKETS, INDUSTRY STRUCTURE, AND AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD VALUE CHAINS, HOW BIG DATA INFORMS DECISION MAKING BY AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS, POLICY MAKERS, AND CONSUMERS AND ENHANCES MARKET EFFICIENCY AND PERFORMANCE.
