** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF PRRSV OUTBREAKS IN SWINE FARMS IS CRUCIAL TO CONDUCT APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC INVESTIGATION, ESTABLISH APPROPRIATE BIOCONTAINMENT PRACTICES TO PREVENT DISEASE SPREAD THAT MAY IMPACT THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN. CURRENTLY, THERE IS NO TOOL TO ASSIST PRODUCERS USING PRODUCTIVITY DATA ALREADY COLLECTED ON A DAILY BASIS TO EARLY IDENTIFY SIGNALS ASSOCIATED WITH PRRSV OUTBREAKS. OUR COLLABORATIVE PROJECT AIMS TO FILL THIS GAP BY DEVELOPING A SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM TO ASSIST SWINE PRODUCERS TO MONITOR IN REAL-TIME KEY PRODUCTION INDICATORS (KPI'S) TO DECREASE THE TIME TO IDENTIFY DISEASE OUTBREAKS BY IDENTIFYING DEVIATIONS IN PRODUCTIVITY AND PROMOTE DATA-DRIVEN SWINE HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT. OUR GOAL IS TO LEVERAGE A NATIONAL RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAM TO DEVELOP AN EASY-TO-USE AUTOMATED TOOL, AVAILABLE TO ALL PRODUCERS, PROVIDING THE INDUSTRY WITH THE CAPACITY TO MAXIMIZE FARM EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF SWINE OPERATIONS INCLUDING FROM SMALL/INDIVIDUAL FARMERS TO LARGE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS.PARTNERSHIPS WITH INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS WILL ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF OUR RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ACTIVITIES. MOREOVER, THE TOOL CAN BE ADAPTED TO OTHER LIVESTOCK ANIMAL PRODUCTION. THE APPROACH WILL PROVIDE A RAPID TOOL TO ONGOING MONITOR KPI'S TO EARLY DETECT PRRSV OUTBREAKS, FARM-LEVEL REPORTS HIGHLIGHTING THE DEVIATIONS IN PRODUCTIVITY AND ROAD MAPS FOR FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATION. WE ANTICIPATE THAT THE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION WILL AID DECISION-MAKING AND DECREASE THE TIME TO IDENTIFY DISEASE OUTBREAKS TO PREVENT MAJOR ECONOMIC LOSSES TO THE U.S. SWINE INDUSTRY.
