** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THIS IS AN INTEGRATED PROJECT PROPOSAL FOCUSED ON PROVIDING NEW TECHNOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS FOR WEED MANAGEMENT IN MID-ATLANTIC REGION BUT IT HAS NATIONAL IMPORTANCE. OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, THE PI AND THE TEAM WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH ON UNAMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS, THEIR USE FOR WEED MONITORING, ANDSTANDARDIZATION OF SPRAY APPLICATION PARAMETERS FOR CORN AND SOYBEAN. THE TEAM WILL EXPLORE NEW WAYS OF WEED DETECTION FOR SITE-SPECIFIC HERBICIDE-APPLICATIONS, AND EVALUATING ECONOMICS OF THE PROPOSED TECHNOLOGIES. THE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS THROUGH THIS PROJECT WILL BE SHARED WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS WHO ARE INTERESTED TO ADOPT SUGGESTED CHANGES TO MAKE THEIR PRODUCTS MORE USER-FRIENDLY. THESE COMPANIES AGREED TO SOME OF THE ISSUES WITH EXISTING UAS TECHNOLOGIES AND ARE POSITIVE ON BRINGING IN ANY CHANGES/MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED BASED ON OUR RESEARCH. THE PROJECTTARGETED TO ADDRESSES THREE PRIORITIES OF ENGINEERING AND PRECISION CROP MANAGEMENT;1) DEVELOP AND TEST THE IMPLEMENTATION OF TOOLS AND PRECISION TECHNOLOGIES THAT INCLUDE DRONES (UAS) TARGETING CROP PROTECTION APPROACHES, 2) DEVELOP SYSTEMS OR TECHNOLOGY FOR SENSING, AUTOMATION AND MECHANIZATION OF LABOR-INTENSIVE TASKS IN PRECISION CROP AND WATER MANAGEMENT., 3) INTEGRATED PROGRAM TO EVALUATE RESOURCE CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES FOR VARIABLE RATE/ SPOT SPRAY FOR PRECISION PEST MANAGEMENT.
