** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** YOUNG BULLS USED AS BREEDING ANIMALS ARE COMMONLY FED HIGHLY ANABOLIC DIETS IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY TO PROMOTE RAPID GROWTHAND EARLY PUBERTY ACCHIEVEMENT. THESE DIETS ARE KNOWN TO NEGATIVELY IMPACT SPERM QUALITY. HOWEVER, THERE IS A KNOWLEDGE GAP ONTHE CONSEQUENCES OF THESE DIETS TO EARLY EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT AND OFFPSRING PERFORMANCE.THIS IS CONSIDERABLY IMPORTANT FOR THE BEEF INDUSTRY, WHERE A SINGLE BULL CAN GENERATE HUNDREDS (SOMETIME THOUSANDS) OF OFFSPRING IN A SINGLE YEAR.THE GOAL OF THIS WORK IS TO BETTER UNDERSTANDHOW BULL DIETS CAN INFLUENCE EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT AFTER FERTILIZATION, AS WELL AS THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR OFFSPRING ONCE PREGNANCY IS ESTABLISHED. WE HYPOTHESIZED THE HIGHLY ANABOLIC DIETSRESULTIN IMPAIRED CONCEPTUS DEVELOPMENTAND HAS NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OFFSPRING WHEN A PREGNANCY IS CARRIED TO TERM.THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THIS KNOWLEDGE GAP AND CONTRIBUTE WITH DIETARY RECOMENDATIONS FOR BULL DEVELOPMENT IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY. THESE RECOMENDATIONS WILL NOT ONLYFOCUS ON BULL FERTILITY, BUT ALSO OFFPSRING PHYSIOLOGY AND GROWTH PERFORMANCE.
