THE SWINE INDUSTRY IS A MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR INDUSTRY. HIGH HEAT CAUSES STRESS IN SWINE RESULTING IN POOR HEALTH AND WELFARE. IN BREEDING HERDS, HEAT STRESS HAS AN ENORMOUS IMPACT ON THE US SWINE INDUSTRY. OF THE $900M IN ESTIMATED REVENUE LOST EACH YEAR FROM, HEAT STRESS HALF IS LOST BECAUSE OF THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS IT MAKES TO BREEDING SOWS AND THEIR PIGLETS. AMONG MANY NEGATIVE HEALTH IMPACTS, HEAT STRESS CAN CAUSE DECREASED FUNCTION FROM THE MAMMARY GLAND RESULTING IN DECREASED AMOUNTS OF MILK AND LOWER MILK QUALITY. THE RESULT OF WHICH IS POOR HEATH AND GROWTH OF PIGLETS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL STUDY HOW INCLUDING A MEDICINAL PLANT CALLED MORINGA OLEIFERA IN THE FEED OF PREGNANT AND LACTATING SOWS ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH COOLING PADS WILL HELP PREVENT THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HEAT STRESS. SPECIFICALLY, THIS PROJECT IS INTERESTED IN DETERMINING WHETHER MORINGA WITH AND WITHOUT COOLING PADS WILL INCREASE QUANTITY OF MILK PRODUCED BY SOWS AS WELL AS IMPROVE THE NUTRITIONAL AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF THE MILK TO HER NURSING PIGLETS. THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT HAVE THE WILL PROVIDE BASIC AND FOUNDATIONAL INFORMATION IMPORTANT FOR UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF HEAT STRESS ON THE MAMMARY GLAND. IN ADDITION, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE THE SWINE INDUSTRY WITH A NOVEL FEEDSTUFF AND COOLING TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN BE USED BY PRODUCERS TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH AND GROWTH OF SWINE (AND OTHER LIVESTOCK) IN CONDITIONS THAT LEAD TO HEAT STRESS. THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE PERIODS OF HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY ARE PREDICTED TO CONTINUE INCREASING AND THEREFORE REMAIN A THREAT TO THE US SWINE INDUSTRY. PREVENTING THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF HEAT STRESS ON PREGNANT AND LACTATING SOWS AND WILL HELP IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY OF SWINE PRODUCTION IN THE FACE OF CLIMATE CHANGE.
