**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SALMONELLA IS A LEADING CAUSE OF FOODBORNE DISEASE IN THE US, OFTEN CAUSED BY CONTAMINATED MEAT. OUR TYPICAL METHOD TO CONTROL BACTERIA, BY USING ANTIBIOTICS, SIMPLY HAS NO EFFECT AND ONLY INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE. WE ARE RESEARCHING A NEW MEANS TO CONTROL FOOD POISONING BY SALMONELLA. RATHER THAN ATTEMPTING TO KILL THESE BACTERIA, WE WILL INSTEAD ATTACK A FUNCTION OF THE BACTERIA ESSENTIAL TO GROW AND PROLIFERATE WITHIN THE INTESTINE OF ANIMALS USED TO PRODUCE MEAT. WE HAVE FOUND THAT WE CAN EFFICIENTLY TURN OFF THIS FUNCTION, TERMED INVASION, BY SUPPLYING A CHEMICAL OF THE FATTY-ACID CLASS THAT IS HARMLESS TO PEOPLE AND ANIMALS. FURTHER, WE CAN PRODUCE THIS CHEMICAL IN A RECOMBINANT PROBIOTIC STRAIN OF E. COLI. OUR PLAN IS TO FEED THIS RECOMBINANT STRAIN TO CHICKENS, THUS DELIVERING THE CHEMICAL TO THE INTESTINE, MAKING SALMONELLA UNABLE TO COLONIZE THE ANIMAL. THIS WORK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CARRY GREAT IMPACT, AS IT PROVIDES THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INEXPENSIVE AND EFFECTIVE MEANS TO CONTROL AN IMPORTANT FOODBORNE DISEASE PRIOR TO HUMAN INFECTION IN A WAY THAT DOES NOT PROMOTE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE.
