**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** CHANGES IN CLIMATE, FIRE REGIMES, AND MANAGEMENT ARE ALTERING THE DISTRIBUTIONOF DRY FORESTS IN THE WESTERN US, INCLUDING PINYON- JUNIPER (P-J) WOODLANDS, IMPACTING CRITICAL ECOSYSTEM SERVICES SUCH AS CARBON STORAGE, FORAGE PRODUCTION, AND WILDLIFE HABITAT. ANTICIPATING WHERE P-J WOODLANDS MAY CONTINUE TO EXPAND OR CONTRACT IN THE FUTURE REMAINS A SUBSTANTIAL CHALLENGE FOR MANAGERS.DEMOGRAPHIC MODELS ARE A POWERFUL TOOL TO PREDICT FOREST CHANGES USING DATAON TREE SURVIVAL, REPRODUCTION, AND GROWTH RATES. HOWEVER, COLLECTING THE NEEDED DATA TO DEVELOP THESE DEMOGRAPHIC MODELS AT THE LARGE SCALES RELEVANT FOR LAND MANAGERSIS OFTEN LOGISTICALLY INFEASIBLE USING TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES. THE GOAL OF THIS SEED GRANT PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNIQUES TO QUANTIFY TREE SURVIVAL, REPRODUCTION, AND GROWTH AT MANAGEMENT RELEVANT LARGE SCALES USING AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY. THEDATA AND TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED IN THIS PROJECT WILL SERVE AS THE BASIS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH FORECASTING FOREST CHANGES AND FOREST CARBON STORAGE IN RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND MANAGEMENT APPROACHES.
