**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF OUR RESEARCH IS TO SUPPORT EFFECTIVE LAND-USE PLANNING BY CREATING METHODS CAPABLE OF INCORPORATING AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IN LOCAL LAND USE POLICY. THIS PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF VIABLE SCENARIOS AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICE MAPPING METHODOLOGIES TO INFORM THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES. TO MEET THIS GOAL, WE PROPOSE FIVE OBJECTIVES: 1) COMPLETE ANALYSIS OF ALREADY GATHERED GEOSPATIAL DATA AND DEVELOP A LAND FRAGMENTATION BASELINE, 2) CREATE A FORECASTING LAND-USE MODEL, 3) CONDUCT A BACKCASTING SCENARIO EXERCISE, 4) PERFORM ECOSYSTEM SERVICE (ES) VALUATION ASSESSMENTS FOR THREE KEY ES, AND 5) APPLY OUR FINDINGS TO A PLANNING TOOL THAT ALLOWS COMMUNITY MEMBERS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, FARMERS AND LAND-USE PLANNERS CAN UTILIZE TO COMPARE VARIOUS DEVELOPMENT OPTIONS.OUR INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM WILL BRING TOGETHER EXPERTISE IN ECONOMIC MODELING OF LAND USES, ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING, SOIL SCIENCE, DATABASE DESIGN, AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES TO CREATE NEW MODELS TO UNDERSTAND THE ECONOMIC AND LAND USE IMPLICATIONS OF CERTAIN POLICY OPTIONS. BY CAREFULLY EXAMINING THE IMPLICATIONS OF FARM MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO CARBONSEQUESTRATION AND LAND CONNECTIVITY, OUR PROJECT WILL INFORM OUR COLLECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE PRACTICES AND THEIR ECOSYSTEM SERVICE BENEFITS. DEVELOPING CROSS-SCALE MODELS WILL ENABLE US TO CONNECT THESE FARM BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL SCALES. ULTIMATELY, OUR WORK WILL DIRECTLY INFORM THE DESIGN OF INCENTIVE STRUCTURES, CARBON PRICES, AND THEIMPLEMENTATION OF LAND USE ZONING IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT GENERAL PLANS.
