**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE MID-ATLANTIC COASTAL PLAIN IS EXPERIENCING GREATER RELATIVE SEA LEVEL RISE THAN OTHER COASTAL REGIONS OF THE U.S., MAKING IT AN IMPORTANT REGION TO MEASURE FUTURE SALINITY IMPACTS ON COASTAL AGRICULTURE. WHEREEXCESS AMOUNTS OF SALTS ACCUMULATE INSOILS, REDUCEDCROP YIELDS AND POOR SOIL QUALITY CAN OCCUR, BUT THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT ALWAYS APPARANT VISUALLY. PRECISION AGRICULTURE TECHNOLOGY, INCLUDING MEASUING HOW SOIL CONDUCTS AN ELECTRICAL SIGNAL, DRONE IMAGERY, AND YIELD MONITORS, CAN ALL BE USED TO MAP THE VARIABLE EFFECTS OF SOIL SALINITY. THIS WILL ALLOW FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS TO DECIDE THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION TO TRY AND CORRECT SOIL SALINITY.THIS PROJECT WILL MAP FIELDS UNDERGOING SALTWATER INTRUSION ALONG THE MARYLAND AND DELAWARE COASTLINES USING ELECTRICAL SIGNALS THROUGH THE SOIL AND HAND SAMPLING. THESE MAPS WILL BE USED TO CREATE VARIABLE RATE PRESCRIPTIONS FOR FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS TO APPLY GYPSUM ONLY WHERE NEEDED, REDUCING OVERALL COSTS TO THE FIELD. STANDARD MID-ATLANTIC SOIL TESTS WILL ALSO BE COMPARED TO WESTERN US SALINITY TESTS, TO PROVIDE FARMERS WITH IMPROVED LOCAL GUIDANCE ON THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM. THROUGH MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPSWITH FARMERS, LANDOWNERS, AND AGRICULTURAL SERVICE PROVIDERS (E.G. CONSULTANTS AND EXTENSION PERSONEL), WE WILL DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF PRECISION AGRICULTURE EQUIPMENT AND INTERPRETING SOIL SALINITY TESTING. DUE TO SEA LEVEL RISE, STORMWATER SURGES, AND CLEANSING RAINFALL EVENTS, COASTAL SOIL SALINITY IS DYNAMIC AND MAY CHANGE QUICKLY. PRECISION MAPPING WILL BE AN EFFICIENT METHOD TO MAINTAIN YIELDS WHERE POSSIBLE, REDUCE THE APPLICATION OF GYPSUM WHERE IT IS NOT NEEDED, OR ALLOW FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS TO CONVERT THE LAND FROM AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION.
