**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** ANIMAL MANURE IS A POTENTIAL SOURCE OF VALUABLE RECYCLABLE NUTRIENTS (P AND N) IN AGRICULTURE BUT POSE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS UPON IMPROPER DISPOSAL. THEIR CONTAMINATION OF WATER BODIES CAUSES WATER QUALITY DEGRADATION, ECOSYSTEM DISRUPTION, AND LOSS OF RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE STORAGE AND DIRECT SOIL APPLICATION OF ANIMAL MANURE INCREASES THE EMISSION OF MALODOROUS GASES AS WELL AS GREENHOUSE GASES. THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY ESTIMATES THAT 15% OF THE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ANIMAL MANURE MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. HENCE, IT IS CRITICAL TO DEVELOP ENHANCED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES TO BOOST NUTRIENT USE EFFICIENCY IN CROP PRODUCTION, IMPROVE WATER QUALITY, AND REDUCE ODOROUS AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. WE PROPOSE TO INVESTIGATE THE USE OF A BIOREACTOR SYSTEM USING BIOCHAR AND ZEOLITE (A COMMON COMMERCIAL CATALYST AND ADSORBENT) TO REDUCE EMISSIONS TO THE ATMOSPHERE AND RECYCLE NUTRIENTS FROM MANURE FOR USE IN CROP PRODUCTION, REDUCING NUTRIENTS LOSS TO WATER BODIES AND TO THE ATMOSPHERE. THIS STUDY WILL INCLUDE INTEGRATED LABORATORY, FARM AND FIELD-SCALE RESEARCH, AS WELL AS AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS.
