**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THE SUSTAINABILITY OF US CORN FARMING AND ITS UTILIZATION FOR ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS BEING INCREASINGLY SCRUTINIZED. AT THE SAME TIME, THE POTENTIAL ASSOCIATED WITH COLORED CORNS HAS BEEN LARGELY OVERLOOKED. PURPLE, BLUE AND RED CORN ARE RICH SOURCES OF PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOUNDS WITH POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS AND OTHER DIVERSE AGRO-INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. PURPLE CORN CONTAINS ALMOST FOUR TIMES MORE ANTHOCYANIN PIGMENTS THAN BLUEBERRIES AND THESE ARE CONCENTRATED IN CORN PERICARP, A PROCESSING WASTE. PERICARP CAN BE RECOVERED AT THE FRONT-END AND SELECTIVELY PROCESSED FOR PHYTOCHEMICAL EXTRACTION WHILE THE ENDOSPERM REMAINS UNAFFECTED, YIELDING NOVEL PROCESS ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES IMPROVING THE OVERALL PROCESS PROFITABILITY. THE POTENTIAL OF CORN ANTHOCYANINS FOR SUPPLANTING THE PETROLEUM-BASED RED 40 FOOD DYE, AND PHYTOCHEMICALS FOR ECO-FRIENDLY PEST CONTROL WAS DEMONSTRATED PREVIOUSLY. CONVENTIONAL BREEDING TECHNIQUES ARE BEING CURRENTLY UTILIZED AT MU FOR ADAPTING COLORED CORN VARIETIES TO THE MIDWESTERN GROWING CONDITIONS. THIS PROPOSAL IS INTEGRATED WITH THOSE BREEDING EFFORTS BY UTILIZING LAB-SCALE CORN DRY MILLING PROTOCOLS FOR ASCERTAINING THE MILLING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW DEVELOPED VARIETIES, AND IDENTIFYING AND QUANTIFYING THE POLYPHENOLIC COMPOUNDS IN THESE VARIETIES AND PROCESSING COPRODUCTS BY SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES. THESE EXPERIMENTS WILL IDENTIFY THE MOST PROMISING VARIETIES BASED ON THEIR DESIRABLE MILLING CHARACTERISTICS AS WELL AS HIGHER POLYPHENOLIC CONTENT. VARIOUS DRY MILLING PARAMETERS WILL BE ASSESSED FOR OPTIMIZING THE RECOVERY OF POLYPHENOLIC COMPOUNDS. ULTRASONIC- AND MICROWAVE-ASSISTED EXTRACTION WILL BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY SOLVENTS TO INCREASE THE POLYPHENOLIC EXTRACTIONS. THIS WORK WILL POTENTIALLY BENEFIT FARMERS, INDUSTRY AND CONSUMERS ALIKE.
