**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** IDAHO LEADS THE NATION IN POTATO PRODUCTION, ACCOUNTING FOR 31% OF THE 2012 U.S. CROP. HOWEVER, THE STATE'S POTATO INDUSTRY IS UNDER ATTACK BY GLOBODERA PALLIDA, OR THE PALE CYST NEMATODE (PCN), WHICH NEGATIVELY IMPACTED IDAHO'S ECONOMY BY $25.56 MILLION IN 2016. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A NEMATOCIDAL BIOFUMIGANT DERIVED FROM MUSTARD SEED MEAL THAT KILLS 100% OF PCN EGGS IN LABORATORY STUDIES, BUT AT AN APPLICATION RATE THAT MAKES ADOPTION CHALLENGING. THEREFORE, OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE BIOFUMIGANT FORMULATION FOR CONTROLLING PCN THAT CAN BE GROWER-IMPLEMENTED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT. THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT CONCENTRATION IN THE IMPROVED PRODUCT WILL BE SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED, THUS ENHANCING PRODUCT EFFICACY, FURTHERING INDUSTRY SUPPORT, AND ULTIMATELY EXPANDING GROWER UTILIZATION.OUR MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM WILL UTILIZE OUR EXISTING PILOT PLANT PRODUCTION SYSTEM, FIELD TRIALS, STATISTICAL MODELING, EXTENSION ACTIVITIES, AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER WITH COMMERCIAL PARTNERS TO MEET THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 1) DEVELOP AN IMPROVED BIOFUMIGANT THAT HAS INCREASED EFFICACY AND GREATER POTENTIAL FOR GROWER ADOPTION; 2) TEST THE IMPROVED BIOFUMIGANT FORMULATION IN FIELD STUDIES TO DEMONSTRATE EFFICACY, INCREASE GROWER ACCEPTANCE, AND PRODUCE LABEL RECOMMENDATIONS; 3) EVALUATE ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF PRODUCING AND USING THE IMPROVED BIOFUMIGANT AS COMPARED TO METHYL BROMIDE AND OTHER ALTERNATIVES; AND 4) ESTABLISH A PATH TOWARDS GROWER UTILIZATION THAT INCLUDES EXTENSION AND OUTREACH, AS WELL AS INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT IN SCALE-UP PRODUCTION OF THE BIOFUMIGANT. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE DISCOVERY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PRACTICAL PEST MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES TO METHYL BROMIDE BY CREATING AN EFFICACIOUS BIOFUMIGANT THAT MEETS GROWER NEEDS.
